Well I just towed the 24HFS with the F350 dually for the first time today. All I will say is I will never ever tow anything again with a 1/2 ton. Did my brand new 2016 F150 tow it ok, well I will say it towed it. But you 1/2 ton guys are in complete denial. There is absolutely no comparison between the two. One does it safely and the way it was intended and the other barely gets the job done while beating your truck to death. The diesel never slowed, never down shifted, never swayed. I much rather have too much tow vehicle and keep my 6yo and my wife safe. My opinion is tow with the right truck. And after today I'm even more convinced and can't stress it enough.

you nailed it right there. I also have a 2016 F350 dually. I'm towing a 12,000 lb 5th wheel, which is half my trucks capacity. It's easy on me and on my truck. Accelerates and stops great. Handling is wonderful. Everything is better than 1/2 ton towing. The 1/2 ton towers are delusional if they think there is nothing to gain with a bigger truck. They would quickly change there minds if they spent a weekend in one.

I'm experiencing some truck envy. I have the F350 SRW, and I look at some 5th wheels and think "I should have gotten the dually." My next one will be the F450 then I'll be sure it's enough. (550 maybe?)

x2
We towed our 8300# Wind Jammer 5600 miles from Texas to Oregon, Wyoming, and Colorado last year and felt it did a great job up and down hills. We were very pleased and bragged about how well it did.
As we are going to buy a 40'+ FW in 2017, we went ahead and purchased a 3500HD GMC Duramax, CC, 8' bed, DRW for the larger rig. We have pulled the WJ with it on three trips now and, while we have not been in the mountains, it was an amazing difference in handling and driver confidence. Indeed, the 1/2 was properly equipped and did pull our TT well, but the 1 ton diesel dually wins hands down. AND...I use it for a daily driver when I do leave my home office; it is getting around 15-16 MPG in Dallas/Fort Worth traffic and about 18-19 out on the road, not a lot different than the 5.3 gasser I had before. Towing we get 10-12 depending on traffic and roads, which is about 2 miles per gallon better also. LOVE the larger truck, so does DW!

Like lots have said, you won't know till you try. I had a 2013 z 71 1500 when I bought my 1/2 ton towable WORK AND PLAY 25 WBLE, 6,600 with 1,100 tongue. The truck was uncomfortable towing the tongue heavy W&P. The 6 speed usually stayed in 4th gear on our flat Florida roads. I bought a 16 F 250 which doesn't do too much better than the Chevy. So, if the trailer is the one you want, get it, tow it, then you make the decision.

So the one I'm looking at now is a sport trek 302vth which is a little bit lighter than the 29hfs. I know it's not forest river but I like the layout better and it has better features for the money.

Not a bad looking trailer. Good luck and happy camping!

Thanks. I'm still a little nervous about the weight and size of it with my half ton silverado with the 5.3 and a 9300 pounds capacity. The truck weighed in at 5850 with me in it and a 7200 pound gross weight rating. I think the tongue weight was a little over 1000 pounds.

I weighed my 2013 GMC on the day we went down to pick up the new Wind Jammer 3001w. With full fuel, the wife, and myself we weighed 5650# on the CAT scales. We picked up the trailer and stopped at the scales on the way home to find the entire rig now weighed 13,060# and trailer axles on the scales alone weighed 6320#. That meant the trailer weighed 7410# (yellow sticker on trailer said 7031#), empty, Day One; and some further figuring revealed the hitch weight to be 1090# (was listed as 880# in the brochure). As the rocket scientists at Fun Town in Cleburne, TX had sold me a 1,000# Trekker hitch, it was overloaded as soon as it was hitched up. After we packed we found the hitch weight to be 1175# so I changed to a 1400# Equalizer last year. The truck was rated to pull 9600# so we were under on that category, but we were pretty close to maximum payload at the bed when packed for a trip. Weight was always considered when we were packing and some items stayed home.
With the change to the 2015 3500HD Duramax DRW, all that is a non-issue for now. Good to see you are watching and being careful with your weights, but don't trust the sales booklets for correct weight. Always look at the yellow and white tags on the trailer to see the real weights, then add about 10% as a safety margin before deciding!

Yeah I know it would be non issue with a bigger truck but as its not an option for a bigger truck.

I had a 2014 DBL Cab Silverado with the 6.2 and max tow package and I towed a 32' Tracer Prime Time 3200BHT just fine. I live in CT so it's hilly where I'm at and I never had any issues. I did just upgrade to a 2500 Duramax Crew cab due to my kids were outgrowing the dbl cab and it's a difference like night and day, but overall depending on your trucks config, you should be fine towing

Oh, I hear you on that, making the decision to trade in a perfectly good GMC 1500 SLE wasn't easy...or cheap! BUT...we want to go to a FW in 2017, so here we go.
It looks like you are doing your homework, you will be fine. Keep us posted as to what you choose please.
