Real time update with my gear in my sig.
Just got to the west side of yellowstone via 94, 90, 191 from MN. The trip was not too bad except for the 30-35mph head winds from Billings to Bozeman. I was running 3k rpms at 60mph. From time to time the truck would jump to 4k rpms and i would have to feather it back down. The hllls I was ok with but the wind is something I have never had to deal with.
Just sharing my personal experience. ...

So my 2001 Chevy express 1500 1/2 ton should be fine pulling 5k? I have a nice wdh and a trans cooler - according to specs I'm at max with 12000 lbs total but it seems to ride nice. Kinda crazy that you had to rebuild a trans, what happened there ? Overheat ?

Should I be concerned ? Or go with it?

Grizzly is a nice place right in town . have fun plenty to see and do and plenty of driving . the best is very early morning or even late afternoon evening . heading to salmon fly fest today at the campfire lodge after a morning of fishing .

I went back and forth with the "half ton tow-able" verbiage myself.
Ended up getting more truck than trailer based on a few factors.
I have a 2016 F-250 Crew Cab Lariat 6.2L Gas 2WD and I tow a Flagsatff 27 BEWS TT. The trailer comes in at around 7800 lbs. fully loaded. I weighed the rig on my first trip, total package 14,460 lbs. with 3/4 tank of fuel. Tow capability of the TV is 19,000 lbs. So I'm within the numbers. Also the WDH (Equalizer) soaks up some of the tongue weight.
Just got back yesterday from a cross country trip. On the flats with no wind it was a fight to keep my speed under 70 mph. Fighting a little wind and a few grades slowed me down but nothing dramatic. Expected performance with the "box" that I'm dragging around. And I get a little sway push from passing cars and trucks, but nothing that has me grabbing for control.
To answer the OP, in short "more truck than trailer" wins every time.
They said the WDH would make some noises. Metal to metal bumps and grinds. I heard a few, sounds like the hitch right? Wrong!
Evidently the noise I heard was the propane tanks jumping off and being dragged under the TT tongue out of my rear view, but that's another post.

Size of Truck

I have learned that I can pull almost anything with almost anything. pulling is NOT the issue, handling, stopping and sway are the issues. I now pull with a F350 DRW it pulls my 5th wheel with ease and my little 1/2 ton towable towhauler. No sway comfortable tow.

moral of story don't buy a truck with specs that will barely do what you want it to do. Get more truck than you need. Nothing any worse than getting to the campground completely worn out from fighting the trailer all the there.

Preaching to the choir, my brother! But, the story is a lot of folks already have the truck (me) and the first trailer is at the limits before we get smarter and upgrade. Comfy towing all day long now!

Got a popup two sites over being pulled by a 2X Dodge dually with a Cummins.

This IS enough truck, A/C is all most as big as the popup.

Just some more personal experience. After pulling my 29hfs with my 2004 gmc 2500 HD (6.0 gasser) to/from yellowstone and grand tetons. I will be upgrading to a newer 1 ton and diesel. I'm not so worried about the load but I was under powered for the winds and some of the hills.
Again, just my experience...

No way that's enough truck. I have a brand new 16 F150 5.0 and struggle to pull the 24HFS empty. Between sway, loading, hills, etc. I have 6,000 miles on the F150 and just traded for a 16 F350 Diesel Dually. And that with the tanks empty. When I pulled just a four wheeler it wasn't horrible. Loaded a RZR in the back and we had to pull over and rearrange the load. Still struggled. Then tried putting a four wheeler in the bed and filled the truck completely up and then loaded everything in the nose. Sway was 10x better but now over tongue weight lol. 1/2 tons just aren't the best for towing these. Just an opinion.

Guess not all 6.0 are created equal . I've towed my 29hsf from Yellowstone . teton pass , through out Colorado [the I-70 gauntlet ] rabbit ears , grand mesa , all the way to Fort Meyers FL and back again to Yellowstone and the 6.0 and truck does just fine . are there times when i wish i could fly up the passes at 65 , Sure . but the number of miles thinking that is only a few and the miles i have no cares thousands !

NS,
As I got back to MN and started to pay attention to what octane I was putting in (back to 87 in MN but was 85 most of the time out west...). My performance and mileage was much better. I need to play with this some more to make certain I have the facts. I just know that when I was running 85 octane that my 6.0 was not happy out in SD, ND, MT, WY...

Are there places you can get premium recreation fuel (no ethenol)? Your truck will love it.

my 4 catagories in tow vehicles

1] overkill.... as in dually pulling a pop-up
2] well matched.... pull the mountain states as if they were flatlanders
3] barely make legal.... scary up and down mountains and x-winds
4] overloaded and squatting.... pine box time

The further west the higher elevation the less octane . regular goes from 87 to 85 . i use mid grade keep 89 any less and the 6.0 will know it . now full premium i found to be a waste as notice no difference but do if i stick in reg

I wish I had been paying more attention while I was out there last week. I could have ran some real time comparisons. At least I know that my 6.0 does not like the 85 octane in those mountains when pulling the trailer.

Thanks for sharing your experience(s)...
