Getting ready for Sturgis 2015

Have done a few "dry runs" with the camper to make sure everything is working fine and to ensure there is no issue with the towing aspect. I have a few last minute items coming from Amazon but nothing I can't live without if they don't get here in the next week. The big item remaining to get done this week is to finally hit the scales to ensure I'm loaded "good enough". I know I'm going to heavy on my TV rear axle but I'm going to try to pack as even as I can. I should 2,677lbs of cargo available in the TH. The two bikes (smaller Honda cruisers) and all our gear (including a generator) will be well under this limit. The only concern I have is I will have 600lb 4-wheeler in the bed of the TV. Again, I under the GVWR of the TV but the scales will tell how balanced I really am.

Other than all the pre-check items I have done (i.e. TV fluid changes, tire rotated and balanced, etc...). Any suggestions from the group on taking ~600/10hr trip?

Thanks for your suggestions...

Be mindful of your longer stopping distances. Safety is no. 1 priority. Let us know his it goes... Pictures required!!

WW,
Multiple gas stops with this load. I'm guessing 10mpg....

One thing I want to do is check the hubs/tires for temp at each gas stop. I did not get a TPMS, so I have to go old school on the monitoring aspect...

Dennis,
We are leaving next Tuesday evening, staying till the following Tuesday.

Will you have two bikes in the garage? When I towed with just one bike in the garage, I was getting 11mpg. Maybe I will get under 10mpg. Oh well, it is what it is. The next TV will be a full one ton with a diesel.

Not sure if we are taking one bike or two yet. My wife also has a Harley, but with the mess at Sturgis this year (meaning HUGE crowds expected) we may only take one.

Dennis,
It will be a mess this year for sure. That is one of the reasons we are going early. To try and beat some of the crowd and get some rides in when it's not so busy.

Have a safe trip to/from as well as when you are out there....

Youroo,
Not exactly. I had to simulate the second bike and 4-wheeler via some "dumb" weight. They are my brother-in-laws equipment and I won't actually have them loaded until the day we leave for Sturgis. I will be doing the same later this week when I hit the scales (i.e. dumb weight). It's the best I can do to simulate the actual trip...

WC,
I remember that street but it looked A LOT different last time I was there...

Do you live there or are you out there before the rush?

Fuel stations out there can be few & far between depending on your route. Check your route to be sure & top off when you can.

An app I found useful is called Next Exit; you can get it in paper form ( I think) I have the added challenge if finding diesel that's accessible.

WW,
Since I'm taking a new route this year, I have been planning on getting "gas/fuel" station app, just incase I need it. I will be bringing a spare 6gl gas can for safety as well.

Thanks for the suggestion on Next Exit...

Wife and I stopped in briefly in Sturgis yesterday on the way down from Fargo, ND to Rapid City, SD.
Town is gearing up bigtime for the rally. Vendors are already set up, ready to relieve folks of their cash. The locals we talked to who are not affiliated with the rally are stocking up on food, etc to ride out the rally. Fuel sources are kind of scarce, so plan accordingly. We ran into a problem today we never saw before, a Sinclair station in Presho, SD off of I90 east of Rapid City that only had unleaded with no ethanol and unleaded with ethanol, no midgrade or super. We are traveling in our toad Smart Car and it needs midgrade at a minimum. Had to go down the road a few more miles.
Just a heads up.
Safe travels.

For you military types... I was there a couple of years ago and stayed at the FamCamp at Elsworth AFB in Rapid City. They had plenty of room. It isn't that far to Sturgis from there...

Vasnipe,
Thanks for the update on the gas/fuel item to watch out for. It is amazing how many vendors come to this event. I can't image the $$$ that flow thru Sturgis for the ~week...

Hit the scales today. Had my simulated weight in the bed of the TV (~600 lbs of weighr). In the TH, I had my bike and a garden tractor (~600lbs) in the garage and the generator in the tongue rack ((~130 honda eu3000si). I know I will have ~300lbs of clothes and coolers in the TH. Also, I will have 3 people in the TV (~500lbs). But overall I was loaded.
Now the good and the bad. The good was my TV weighed in at 8000 and the TH weighed in at 8300. Both under my GW limits. The bad was the scale operator could not get my alxe weighted, just the total weigjht.
I'm the end the TV towed everything just fine. The Andersen hitch kept the swaying under control and helped with the WD. My wheel wells (front vs rear) was only off my 1/2 inch off.
