My new 422AMP hauling machine (aka Dually Truck;)

I've been a happy GM guy (of late) and as you can see (from my signature copied from one of my truck forums)... I've been around the block a bit on my trucks......
All Diesel, all the time!
2017 F350 Platinum DRW 6.7L || 2014 2500HD Denali 6.6L || 2008 2500HD Silverado 6.6L || 2002 2500HD Silverado 6.6L || 1998 2500 RAM Cummins-24v || 1994 2500 RAM Cummings-12v || 1989 F250 7.3L || 1987 F250 6.9L

So test driving a new '17 Denali w the new Dmax (loved it!) but the outdated interior (say huh?) and me knowing that the Motor Trend Truck of the Year was the all new Super Duty, I had to make another test drive. Well, the new SD was just as smooth if not quieter than the Dmax, and oh... that modern cab and dash!... yikes, my wife already knew by the look on my face as I drove a demo F350 out of the dealers lot. Wow, I guess that's why I suck at poker! Anyways, it was close. I knew the GM diesels do get a tad bit better mileage. This weighed heavy as we do a lot of miles towing per year. BUT!... the new Ford was just all around much better in today's technology and aesthetics.

So, I ordered my Platinum on Jan 7th (same day as ordering the XLR 422AMP). It was built in Kentucky, transported to my local dealer in 7 weeks time. It's a beast, and the new diesel is very quiet and so smooooth!. Wifey is happy even though it's not a SWB/non-dually. I finally convinced her that we HAD to go dually, forget the non-sexy looks. She finally saw it my way, and most importantly.. the more safe and relaxed way to tow heavy 5ers :-) yippie, and I have a happy wife!

It's got every option except snow plow and off road pkg, really really love it!. Now I'm just trying to get my 1K break-in miles on it before I tow. Weather of late has been keeping her garaged however. ugh!

Just off transporter (dealer snapped pic and teased me w this pic text)

Took me a whole 3 hours to show up (I was working, and they said they had to prep it)

Lightening up my wallet..

Took a day off for a shakedown break-in cruise..

Bottom line in shopping with us, cuz... wifey's opinion has to count when she's riding across the Country on my 5,000 mile excursions...

We both liked the Denali and Platinum Super Duties. The Dodge Ram however was nixed (by her!), she did NOT like the additional "noise" from the straight 6. I kinda did, thought it to be kind of man-lee!

Decisions.... the Denali did have the outdated interior..hmmm, but I still really liked that DMax...and the Denali (loaded) was also $10K less that the Platinum/Ultimate! (yep, all aluminum bodies and much higher-tech devices add up quick!). Anyways, it was a close call, and I don't think either one would of been a bad choice (for us).

A few mods and farkles so far..
Retrax Pro MX retractable tonneau cover
Reese Elite 25K hitch (OEM puck system mount)
Gatorback rear (dually) mudflaps
+ I made my own Fuel door (lockable) mod...

Cheeers all you heavy haulers out there!

Nice! We were also looking at the new 4th gen F350 but landed on a 17 Denali instead. While we love the technology package of the new platinums, we couldn't justify the $10k premium. The things we wished the Denali had were the push button start, front camera, and adaptive cruise control. I wouldn't say the GM trucks interiors were outdated. They were the ones to first mirror their half-ton counterparts in 2015 while Ford just started doing it in 2017. And the F150 interiors havent changed since 2015 either!

Have fun with the new rig!

I really like the color. It will look sharp pulling a xlr for sure. It's not gonna turn as sharp as a GM. My uncles 17 3/4 super duty takes as much room as my 16 Chevy dually to turn around, not to mention backing trailers. As much as I like both the 17 ford and Chevy new diesels, I'd just get in trouble since it is also my daily driver for now having that much power. Did a power slide with the dealer in back! Got a great deal on my 16. I also like my seats better than his ford which I have driven several hundred miles.

Sweet truck, congrats. I'm also in the "I have to convince the wife why we need a dually despite the looks" camp. I'll wear her down eventually.

Is that Cayuga in your pics?

The F350 Lariat duelly long bed fully loaded was 72K. The F450 was over kill for my needs. Add another 8K for the extended warranty.

Good eye! Just south of Cayuga State Park (west side of Cayuga Lake). I actually live on Seneca Lake however, all neighborly of course.

Thank you all!

It's not that much, around $2K. The big thing for me was the gear ratio; I do a lot of super slab (point A to B) with the RV, so I wanted the 3.55 gear ratio and you could not get that in the F450. I did want the larger brakes that the 450 has however, but gearing (mileage) was more important for my decision.

The Power Stroke does a much better job (fuel mileage wise) doing the high speeds with the 3.55. Gassers do love the higher RPM's, no so much with the oil burners. This is my 6th diesel pickup truck, it's also my best, but at this price point.. it better be!

I'm about due for a trip up there with the XLR...our family has done many trips over the years, starting with the PUP at Taughannock Falls, to renting lakeside houses and taking our boat fishing, to my last camper at a CG just above Interlaken, but haven't been there yet with the XLR. And almost always on the west side of Cayuga...😉

Bring the bike and c'mon up! It's going to be 77F today, but then again this early here?... could be 40 tomorrow!

I'm sure you're talking about summer however, and if you need any help, tips or restaurant advise?... just holler!

I sure am glad Ford has gotten away from those nasty old Dodge looking fender flairs.

Thanks...I may take you up on that at some point. Last time we stayed at Sned-Acres CG, nothing fancy, cheap and full hookups. I have a group of friends that have THs, we may just have to plan a trip up there soon. Enjoy the new truck!

For in-expensive camping in that same area, look at Sampson State Park. It's HUGE, tons of bike paths/roads, has lake access w a Marina. Water & Elec sites are also very reasonable and spacious sites.

OP, congrats on the truck. You stated you had to wait 1,000 miles before towing your XLR. Question: Do semi's do the same thing? Answer: NOPE and you shouldn't either. I didn't when I got myself a 2015 F350 and it runs strong with no oil consumption between 7,500 mile oil change intervals. All I recommend is you run it for about 250-500 miles on the factory fill and put the correct Ford spec'd oil (5w40) afterwards.

Do not use API CK spec oils that aren't Ford Approved. Most CK oils do not protect engine against wear and Ford has a special bulletin about the topic.

Good luck with your new ride and happy towing!
