Overpasses
Our XLR 340x12 measures 13'2" at the highest point. Since we are new to a 5th wheel height, do any of you have suggestions on traveling? The interstates are all acceptable heights but how can you find out if a secondary roads overpass is high enough going to a campground. I'm suspecting that I just need to ask when I make a reservation but was curious about what others do.

We are investing in a GPS system (not sure name of it because DH is handling that issue) that tells you the height of any overpasses on your projected trip path. We took our 5er on an initial shake down cruise last week and as we drove down the road we were talking about some things and all of a sudden DH said "OH ****!" Scared me to death...then he explained that as we approached an overpass he realized we had only like 6" clearance (and sometimes these overpasses do sink a bit). We made it fine but it reinforced to us that we need to get this system before our next trip.

I use the all stays camping and RV app.
I check my route with the app before we leave on any trip.

I would just call the camp ground, tell them the direction of travel odds are they will know of any problems leading to their location.

The overpass don't sink. But they do pave under them. Adding an inch or two of blacktop every time raises road

Don't they typically grind the old asphalt up before repaving? That is what I see done around my area.

I use a Rand McNally GPS unit for RV's. In the RV set-up section the user states the parameters for the camper such as height, length, width and so forth. The route for towing is than computed by the GPS using these parameters. So far it has been accurate, but I still use paper maps and common sense.

Use a garmin 760
Same as the post above just gar mins version. There are some areas it does not know in Canada though, warns you it is not sure on your access. Used on a trip to the U.S. it work well, does more then just height, propane and tunnels as well,

our camper hooked up is 13'5" so we are also worried about this. Legal height is 13'6" most overpasses will be ok. I believe semi van type trailers are 13'6' we ordered a truckers atlas which has bridge height in it, still thinking about moving hitch up on camper it will lower camper about 1" we'll be watching close all overpasses.

Having worked in the trucking industry for 33 years, I can tell you not to believe the posted height on an overpass. Many different circumstances conspire to change the height by one or two inches, lower or higher. The best thing to have is a truck or RV specific GPS which routes with clearances in mind.

Saw this video when researching the subject myself. Painful to watch a couple a/c's be squeegeed from their roof.

Garmin 760RV, saved my bacon in Spokane...it was $399, but worth the price when considering the cost of one repair bill from hitting an overpass! That model also will route you around weight/length/width restricted areas once you input your own rigs numbers. I recommend it!

I also use the Rand McNally GPS (7720 I think). One caution - it will only route you around low clearances IF you are following route to a specific destination (e.g. the campground). If you are just using the map feature and driving around, it will not warn you of low clearance.
Another good resource is a Truckers Road Atlas. Has low clearances listed in a table by state, then by highway and location.
Jim - I'm from Oswego, NY.

I had the Good Sam site route us and I went under a underpass that was way too close. I called them and they said even what is listed on signs at the overpass maybe incorrect. We got lucky by a few inches. Scared us badly. I like the GPS idea but I'm not sure if I trust that either. Calling camp ground maybe best.

Thanks everyone. We'll look into updating our Garmin. We haven't used it since the phones do so well with directions.
