As far as how to fasten a mount: the wall, has a vertical 2" x 6" (1-1/2" x 5-1/2" actual) stud centered on the wall and on both sides of that wall (LR & BR) And, there is a clear space in the center where the sliding doors don't travel; meaning you can use a 2" lag / large screw without screwing into and screwing up a sliding door. You can move a door to one side and peer down into the space with a flashlight and see what I'm talking about.
The actual usable width of the stud is probably 4-1/2", since you don't want to be any closer than 1/2" to the edge, but dead center is how my mount was set up. Forget attaching anything that has to hold weight on the 1/8" luan with vinyl covering; won't hold diddly squat. I would restrict fastening to those 2 x 6s only, which FR so graciously provided.
Now when I added the overhead cabinet and the drop-down shelf, I did attach to the thin plywood, but only to pull the plywood to the cabinet or shelf structure... for appearance... 99.99% of the support is from 2 or more screws into those wonderful 2 x 6s.
WW and everyone else, wonderfully helpful advice! We're getting ready to install 3 mounts like the outside mount in the LR, BR and garage (we don't plan to watch much TV, so we're only getting one for now that we can move around and will take down for travel).
Question - What is the mounting situation for the garage? Is there a 2x6 there as well?
