Surge Protector

Just doing some more "shopping" while waiting for the 29HFS to arrive at the end of the month....

It seems the majority of people are using Progressive protectors. If I have done my homework correctly, it looks like I should be ordering the "EMSHW30C" model. By using the hardwired version, I don't have to worry about locking the portable ones. Also, it seems the EMSHW30C model has a "bypass" switch so you can still have power (i.e. unprotected) if the unit has a malfunction.

Looking for any feedback or suggestions from the forum. Also, if anyone has installed one in their 29HFS, I would love to see some pictures as I wait for my 29HFS to arrive....

Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

I went with the 50 amp version of the same unit. Seems to be the best out there and does it all. Will be installing this week.

Taken,
Watched a video from the Progressive website about the install. Seems like a 15 minute install once you know where you want to put it...

Just for verification, is your understanding that you don't need to have separate plugs on either side of the Progressive to bypass it? I see that Dave961 did this via the picture below. I think with the "bypass" switch on the remote LED, you won't need to have the separate plugs.

Correct. To bypass, just hit the button. Mine will be buried behind a wall in my basement so no way am I going to go unscrewing and digging to swap it out when the supplied remote and button do it from the comfort of my galley! Just be sure to order the unit with the remote. They sell it with and without...

Thanks for the conformation just using the "bypass" switch if ever need...

And being cheaper than the portable ones, even better.

It could be located inside the access compartment in the "super pantry" behind the utility wall. Plenty of room. While in there, I would add a 110Vac outlet on the panel so you will have a outlet on that end of the sofa or dinette.

WolfWhistle,
Happy to hear there is plenty of room to add the surge protector. And I saw your outlet/diamond plate mod on the other thread. The DW has already agreed that is on my "to-do" list (with other mods that you have done as well...)

I love this forum...

We just bought a 233S and I was wondering where's the best place to install a surge suppressor. If anyone has any suggestions I'd sure appreciate it. Also, I really like the idea of using plugs to make bypass/replacement very easy. Thanks!

What is a 232S? On this forum dave961 posted pictures of a mod adding a hardwired surge protector. There is a compartment inside behind all the utility connections beside the pantry; that's where he put it. I don't know about the 233S for a good place to put it.
I use an external Progressive protector

I'm rather new to the motorhome experience and bought a "practice r v" from a friend. It is a 2001. we are planning to do something different before going full time. I bought our motorhome from a friend who says he has never had a problem with surge. It is 14 years old an was used at NASCAR races. We have used it many times over the past year. It seems incredible to me that any manufacturer would sell and warranty a $100,000 product without surge protection.

There are surges, low voltage, and high voltage caused by miswired power pedestals and failures in power pedestals. The progressive unit protects from all 3. Someone saying surges are not an issue so don't buy a protector is like saying I've had insurance on my house for 20 years and never used it so I cancelled it. Just last weekend we had very low voltage at our site. Progressive unit shut down our power. If we would have run the air conditioning very long with the low voltage, 98 volts, it surely would have damaged it. Fortunately it wasn't that hot yet.

BTW, point of clarification on the bypass switch. The bypass switch only works if the unit is not damaged as might happen if a big lightning strike hits nearby. Most of the parts in the unit have to be functional for the bypass switch to work. Being able to physically bypass it if trouble is good planning.

Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C Electrical Management System in Roo 233S

I purchased an EMS-HW30C for our 2016 Roo 233S but haven't installed it yet. The shore power comes in under the fridge and behind the converter with no easy access. The only way in it seems to me is to pull out the converter. I will be attempting to do it this week and will probably use the 30A male/female connectors on each side idea to make future removal or bypass easier.
I've read some threads and viewed a video on how to install the EMS-HW30C but if anyone has any good tips on removing the converter I'd sure appreciate hearing from you. Thanks for all the good ideas on this forum!
