Kelly, If you have a Suburban water heater with only ONE inside water heater switch...... the inside switch is for gas and the outside switch is for the electric heating element:
You can run the gas/propane and the electric sides both at the same time.......or each one individually. The gas/propane side heats faster than just the electric heating element side.
To run only on electric...make sure you are plugged into a source of 120 volt shore power. Make sure you have water in the water heater so you don't burn out the electric heating element. Turn on the outside water heater electric heating element switch (and be sure the inside switch is off that goes to the propane DSI). it will take a little bit for the water to heat with the electric element and it is almost silent............unlike the propane side.
