I own my last diesel.. will be gas here on out..

Do you think having the DEF injection would have prevented your repair ?

I think like anything in a vehicle.. If something can go wrong it will for a few or bunch of folks... Emissions are one of those things that work "most" of the time but when they go bad or fail.. LOOK OUT and take out a loan.. It is not just Diesels, gassers have the same issues. They do seem to be "cheaper" to fix though (relatively speaking).

Op I'd go with at least the 2500.

To carry on with the highjack.....i dont know if you all know it, most dont. But emissions related components are covered by a longer warranty than other parts sometimes, and by gov regs i believe.
According to my gmc manuals, some trucks have 5 yr 50k miles, some 7yr 70k, 8 yr 80k and pzev (i know doesn't pertain here) have 15yr..cant remember mileage. Some of it varies by the gvwr and by what parts.
Probably the guy with the '08 Dodge is out of the timeframe for most of it though.

Just an FYI.
Some places wont tell you that you have a warranty, special bulletin, or recall that will cover the repairs, if you don't already know. And some places won't know it either.

MT - as info I had an existing extended warranty in place at the time and it does not cover the emissions stuff ( much to my dismay ) because it is deemed a "wear item" they would pay for about $50 worth of gaskets..lol Not trying to scare anyone of the the diesel band wagon as I love my truck but just be aware there are no free lunches out there and the manuf's really had to do some silly things to get their engines to comply. - pumping dirty exhaust back into the intake is one of them.. good luck

I have a 2015 GMC 2500 6.0 with the 4:10. How are you getting 18 to 19? Is your Chevy 2WD?

I have seen 15.7 avg once according to the telltale electronics on the dash screen.

It has to be 2WD. He is in GA. I tend to forget that for years when we went to the race in Talladega AL, the thing that always jumped out at me was the amount of 2WD pickups. You might see one every 20 years or so here in PA And good luck finding one on a dealers lot, almost a special order.

My lie meter on my dash says I am getting 20... Do the math and it will be more realistic.. 16 to 18.

Cummins 6.7 went with DEF in 2013 at least on the small trucks. They had major issues at first. I am not happy with the EGR crapping up the engine nor the DPFs but unless you delete it all it is what it is. All newer diesels have them. 800lb/ft of torque is nice. The real issue is driving them around town; they do fine pulling and on the highway; not suited for stop and go driving, which is what I do 90% of the time. Need to figure out how to turn off the EGR or try a legal tuner with a bigger fuel pump and water injection. Which some say will clean it up. Expensive to prove them right or wrong.

Not possible. DEF, particulate filters, and EGR systems are all completely different. DEF is injected in the exhaust downstream from the engine to treat exhaust and has zero effect on the engine. EGR soot is what directly effects the engine with the soot recirculated.

Right Dave, but what I wonder about and haven't a clue, is if in a regen cycle (non DEF vehicle) with all the extra fuel that's being dumped in, could the EGR open and bring in considerably more soot? My oil is as dark as black paint even... right after a change.

You can always pull the EGR valve and see if there is any liquid down in the by-pass. They sell new ones on e-bay for 100.00 bucks just bought an OEM for one. They work off vacuum so I would be checking there, and please don't yell I'm not a wrench turner but read it on the Ford Forum.

Is that the same 6.0 by international that ford used? I thought only Ford used them but I guess that is not the case. Just a question? I have a 6.0 with 3.73 rear end and get maybe about 16 down hill, and 11.5 towing.

I have a 2015 Chevrolet 3500HD with the 6.0 and 410 rear. I also can average 18-19 MPG while on the highway maintaining 60-65 MPH.

hello night train, hey funny how just about every link turns into a diesels better than gas debate, don't even mention what trailer hitch you may buy but anyhow your original question about which CHEVY to buy, I have a 24fqsl when loaded with bike camping gear etc. weighs in about 8500 I had a 2014 1500 with the 5.3 and towing package and while it towed it, it struggled on steep grades and the suspension was suffering badly while towing, overall I was not feeling very secure towing with 1500, I upgraded to a 2015 chevy hd2500 with the 6.0 and I can tell you what a night and day towing experience this has been, towing with the hd2500 is truly a dream, mine is a double cab 4 wheel drive and I also average 16-19 on the highway and around 9-10 while towing, and yes I live in pa. where we have lots of hills and mountains, I would go with the hd2500 from my personal experience you will not be sorry, you did say chevy correct take care joe
