If you're going to buy a HD Truck and just beat the crap out of it, the 6.0L is a reasonable choice. Buy it, beat it, burn it. Strong motor (if something of a boat anchor), built tough, easy to work on, 50 year old technology... IOW, typical Chevy.

But if you want something that will be a 90% family truck, grocery-getter and part time Mule, the F-150 with the Coyote V8 has more HP, more torque and is about 50 years ahead of the Chevy technology wise. I get a legitimate 23MPG on the HWY, unloaded and driving for MPG. If I'm in NASCAR Mode (mostly) I only get about 21. Maybe 20 MPG.

In the SuperCrew configuration, it has 385 HP (25 more than the Chevy 6.0) and 387 lb-feet of torque (7 more than the Chevy) However, I'm sure that the Chevy gets more torque at a lower RPM, making it more user-friendly for towing. Haven't looked at Dyno Chart for the torque curve.

But the Coyote V8 ain't chopped liver, either.

PLUS, you can get all that WITHOUT the expense of the Max Tow Package, which also lowers passenger comfort somewhat. And you don't have to worry about the new tech of the EcoBoost.

Right here, http://www.ford.com/resources/ford/g...0_r1_Jan12.pdf rated to pull 10,100lbs with a 3:55 rear axle (more than that just simply sucks)..... Which is almost certainly a low-ball estimate.

If you think you're going to move up to a BIG Unit some day, go for the HD Truck but get the Isuzu Diesel.

If you're stuck on Brand Loyalty, good luck

If you get the Light Duty Truck, you'll want to put some Air Bags or SuperSprings on it and a sway bar. Minor cost. Even most of your HD Trucks lack a sway bar

I currently tow with a Chevy 1500 quadrasteer loaded and modified with 315K the Quadrasteer is basically a 2500hd w softer springs - has 1 ton rear end and a 6liter engine so kinda hard to say it's tows the same as base model 1500 Chevy but my point I drove my dads new ecoboost ford 150 w max tow to pick up my HyperLight 29hfs toyhauler from Ohio to Seattle and I can tell you the ford has the power to climb any hill but gets scary over 60 mph while my quadrasteer doesn't care what speed I'm going zero sway -----

I plan to to get a new truck in a couple years when house is paid for and I would buy the biggest truck that fits your budget- and that's fits any upgrade towing purchases that you plan on purchasing in the future -

For me I really like the GMC 4500 and the new ford 7500 zero issues towing anything with one of those😃😃😃

Back to the O.P. I'm new to this also. Last month bought a 26rr and pulled it on our inaugural trip with my Sierra 1500 4x4. It worked, but it is was not pleasant. On the way home the winds were bad and every time a gust or a big rig would blow by I felt like I was about to lose control. I had my two 6 and 5 year old daughters in the back seat and my wife next to me. Three days ago I traded for a 2013 2500 Sierra with the 6.6 Duramax. I'm hoping the next trip in a couple weeks will be a little more relaxing.

Anyone who thinks that ANY of today's direct injected diesel engines are loud needs to either spend some time in an older one or get out of the hobby and buy a Leaf.
