This is always a hot debate. Dually vs. SRW. Almost like a brand war.

This is an XLR 420 the OP is talking about. Although probably pushing the RAWR of his truck, the pin on the camper is around 2600 lbs.. That's not bad at all.

If the OP is an experienced driver, I would see no problem at all with this set-up (unless the Ram 2500 has a lower RAWR than expected). Yes, its probably the lowest he can go and in time, maybe he'll upgrade. But I'd do it.

Just for reference. My last truck was a 2011 F450. Now I drive a 2015 F350 SRW. I much prefer the SRW. I just make sure whatever camper I buy is under 3500 lbs. on the pin.

OP has a Chevy/GMC, not a Ram. Had a 2500 Chevy 4x4 8' (traded up to 3500 DRW) that pulled a 14k 42' 5er 2300lb pin, no problem, but was, what I thought, at it's limit. Would I pull a 17k at similar length with a 2500, No. This isn't going off numbers, this is real life experience.

Did we ever get that sticker?

You are going to have around 2200lbs payload. Not including what's in the cab.

Bottom line is, you will be over.

Second bottom line, do you care.

Really three options.
Buy smaller trailer
Buy bigger truck
Do neither.

His payload is most likely higher than 2200lbs, mine was around 2500 and it was loaded. Granted, that's not much, and still probably not enough. I think some of the 2500s had payloads up to 3900lbs, but that was 2wd standard bed and gas motor.

I have been reading all the threads on your post and totally agree with all of them (I think). I am positive like others stated your truck is not adequate for the 5er you are looking at.

I really have an issue with making sure TV weights are what they are advertised to be and that is why I am replying to your posting. I have the same truck as you and I purchased it relying on the sales flyer that the dealer provides from the manufacture. The problem is not the tow weight it is the payload max that will bite you. I purchased my truck thinking my payload was going to be 2793lbs. and was quite happy with my upgrade to a 3/4 truck. That was until I decided to look for a larger 5er than I currently have. The bottom line is my payload max is 2214lbs. which is 579lbs. less than the listed weight. So to get to the point I suggest you get actual loaded numbers for your TV and calculate the hitch weight max your truck can haul. The discussion around this issue is in another post so if your interested check my postings regarding Duramax weights appear wrong.

Please don't take anyone's word for what your truck will haul. Check your TV specific labels and do the calculations to make sure you know what you have available before your TT search. Good luck with your TT search.

No one can answer this question without the payload number from the door sticker.

OP says "The pin wt is 2647, dry wt 14516." both will be considerately more when the trailer is loaded....... Our TH Dry Wt is 9800 but actual scale weight is 13.500........ Please DO NOT go by dry weight on a toyhauler........... If you carry toys in this case the trucks combined weight tow weight will either be over or close as well !!! What is the gross weight of that trailer ??????

Not necessarily. We've been talking lately about how FR is posting "real pin weights" now instead of dry weights. There's a pretty good chance the pin weight is really close to what is stated.

Being a fellow SRW owner, I recently ordered a Sherline scale off Amazon. It has the 0-5000 lb. gauge. On our first trip shopping for our next toy hauler, I stopped by a CAT scales and with an entire full tank, had the truck measured with me and the wife plus some 6"x6" boards weighing about what a fifth wheel hitch would weigh.

The truck completely loaded down was at 4080 on the rear axle. Therefore with a 7000 lb. RAWR, I know I can get a camper with a pin weight of 2920 lbs. and be somewhat OK. I could also not fill my auxiliary tank up to the max. to reduce some weight (the truck holds over 120 gallons of diesel). I could also put a golf cart in the back of the toy hauler to help a little bit.

But anyway, when we see a hauler we're interested in, I back my truck underneath the camper's pin and set the pin onto the scale sitting on one of the 6x6 blocks. That tells me what the real pin weight is of that unit with it sitting on my truck.

Ironically, the first camper we tested was a Fuzion 401. Dry hitch weight from Keystone says 3295 lbs.. This camper with a generator, LP tanks, etc. was 3100 lbs. on my scale. Lighter than the estimated weight on the Keystone website.
