Crusader 315 Tire Size upgrade problems.

Well, I was really happy to get the may-pops off and get some decent tires on my trailer. I thought I had done plenty of research and visual inspections. Apparently I did not and now have a potential rubbing situation. Any thoughts on this? The pic with about 3/8" clearance is normal position, the pic with much less clearance the trailer was on an odd angle. The problem bracket is on the passenger/kitchen slide. Any suggestions?

Possible options
1. Tires were special ordered, so taking them back is not really an option.
2. I can use my metal cutoff tool to trim the bracket down. Tire is only a 1/2" closer to the bracket than the factory tires were.
3. Get a welder to use a torch to trim the bracket.
4. Opening the slide less than a 1/2" would move the bracket out past the tire. I have trip coming soon and this may have to be my primary option for now.

Yes, this was a stupid mistake so let's save all of the "You Dummy" comments. I was so excited about new shoes and now I am almost sick.

I don't have an answer for you but I do have another thing for you to be aware of.

I got very lucky with my blow max tires. They did not blow but swelled so much the actually rubbed in the middle of the tire (front and back tire).

Someone warned me as I was driving down the road. Weird thing was that both tires had grown by more than an inch in diameter. The tire guy could not find broken belts and found no real cause for the swelling. My tpms had not even picked up the temp rise yet.

Make sure you have enough clearance between tired as well as to the bracket.

Good luck in your fix and safe travels

I think I'd use the grinder with cutoff wheel to trim the bracket temporarily.

I'm sure you will, but be very aware of the sparks produced while cutting it back.

It's hard to tell from the picture, so can you tell us what exactly that bracket is supporting at that end.

Also, can you get a picture of it from on top of the tire?

I would also like to know what the bracket is for. I would not use a torch but rather like BR said a 4" grinder with thin cutoff wheel.

Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to chime in, any and all input is appreciated. The bracket is a plate that is on the end of the square tubing that slides out with the slide out. The top part of the bracket has a vertical slot in it, it appears it is used to adjust the slide up and down. I can get some more pics in the next couple of days.

You just don't want to cut off something that will affect the stability of the unit or slide.

What size tires did you upgrade to?
Also, I have a 2014 PT 315 and had a recall on it. they had to put something on it to prevent the unit from bottoming out and hitting the tires. Assume they corrected it on the later models.

Tire upgrade

That is what I have on mine and have over 1k miles on them. Now I will go check. Maybe the 2014 and 2015 sit a little different.

Rubbing

Rubbing is racin, not towing! I went to larger tires and had to add 1.75" lift blocks to axle.

tire clearance

I just took a golf cart ride down the the RV storage and mine looks nothing like yours. Even with my tire covers on there is lots of room. Maybe my recall was to put in the blocks like someone else mentioned - sounds like what they did based on the letter but the dealer did not say much about it except that mine was the first one and they had a hard time figuring out how to do it. I received a recall letter about it from FR but maybe you could check online or ask FR about it. The slight difference in the tire size should not matter - it is less than one inch difference so what you have would be a problem with either IMO.

This is the recall I received - found this on another forum thread.
FYI - Ran across this while looking up another recall --

FOREST RIVER issued a recall on the CRUSADER model - Recalls & alerts - Healthy Canadians Website
Starting date:March 24, 2014
Type of communication:Recall
Subcategory:Travel Trailer
Notification type:Safety
MfrSystem:Structure
Source of recall:Transport Canada
Identification number:2014091
TC ID number:2014091
.
On certain model fifth-wheel travel trailers, the tires may have inadequate clearance with the trailer slide-out actuator bracket and may be damaged while towing under certain road conditions. This could result in a blow out which could lead to a crash resulting in injury and/or property damage. Correction: To be determined. Owners are advised not to tow their trailers in the interim.

Wow, that sounds exactly like what it is hitting. And you are right, the clearance had to have been an issue with factory tires also. Thank you very much John, I will get a call in to FR and see what they say.

This is why I love message boards!

After a quick glance it appears according to my VIN I am not apart of this recall. ToDouble said the issue was on the driver's side of his 315, mine is on the passenger. I still reached out to PT just to see what they have to say. Looks like their fix was a little grinding and a 1" lift. That may be what I have to do.

You might want to look at this option. 2 inchs of lift and the ability to allign the axles if needed. Correct Trac.

Def. looks like a possibility down the road Jack. Thank you for your response.

I am in talks with PT as we speak. My unit does not fall under the recall but their warranty department is reviewing my pictures.
