Dexter Axles

Ever since I purchased my Crusader, I haven't been happy with the braking of it. So last week I proceeded to adjust my brakes on the Crusader after a 1300 mile trip.

First off I was troubled that there was no dust covers on the brake adjustment openings. Seems Dexter is not putting them on any longer, which prompted me to order some from Amazon.

Then I find each of the 4 brakes are adjusted differently. This front right tire seemed to be doing most of the braking. The rear tires no braking.

Not complaining here by no means, just giving those who may have purchased a new trailer to do themselves a favor and double check the brake adjustments. I'm convinced that there is very little, if any at all, quality control and final inspections at the axle or RV manufactures.

I'm expecting a much improved braking condition when returning home in a few weeks.

Mine came with the Never adjust breaks guess I should take a look and see if the adjustment holes are covered.

The insides are open to the elements between the drum and backing plate. I don't think the adjustment dust covers do much good, but like the OP I like those puppies in place.

Even though "never adjust" brakes suggest that you never have to adjust it would be wise to check the periodically .

I was actually just reading about gain settings and fine tuning the setup. I haven't towed (New unit) much because we picked it up at the end of Jan, but during my practice trips I have noticed some jerking or inconsistent braking. I thought maybe it was the truck at first (Brake controller) but just towed another trailer with brakes and it worked great. First trip is in May to a local CG for the shake down trip so I will run them as is and if they don't seem to burn in any better I will have to look and see what adjustments I can make. Thanks for the heads up Fred.

You are correct Youroo, on the adjustments for opposite sides.

SeaDog, I just don't trust those so called "never adjust" brakes. I'll keep checking mine on a yearly basis.
