Bob, that link that f1100turbo posted is a pretty good explanation. Basically on a full floating rear axle, the hub assembly and axle assembly take all of the weight of the truck. You can actually pull the axle out of the axle housing, and the truck will still roll down the road....without power of course.
That is the type of configuration that is in the 3/4 and 1 ton pickups, all of the way to tractor trailer drive wheels.
With a semi-floating rear axle, the axle is bearing the weight. If you pull the axle out of the housing, the hub assemble comes with it.
In most cases, a full floating rear axle can carry much more weight than a semi-floating axle.
