Heat on the road

Wondering if it's a problem to run the furnace while on the road. This would be to keep lines and tanks from freezing.
Thanks,
Dave

Don't get caught.. Up here the fine for the first propane tank found on while towing your trailer is about $2,500.. The second is $4,000..

Turn off the propane tanks while traveling?
How would you run the fridge?

Frig

Once he frig gets cold, like frozen in the ice trays, you can let it sit for about six hours before it starts to thaw, that is what I've been told, of course you cannot open it during that six hours...make sure you have either water in your condensation line or a one way check valve as heat will rise back into the frig:

That would work if I had a cold freezer/fridge.
Problem is, I get home from work early on a Friday, go grab the camper out of storage, bring it home and load it up and go, no time to let the camper sit plugged in for hours to get cooled down, I crank it up to 11 on LP and stuff it full of cold stuff and start driving! 2 hour trip and it is nice and cold when we get there.

(I would never pull into a gas station with fridge running tho)

Where is up here? I know in the state of Virginia you can't have propane tanks on for the tunnels but that is it. Other then that you could leave them on. I do not think I would run my furnace while driving simply because of the combustion air and exhaust outlets. Your Refer would be fine.

Glen's profile says Canada. Guess that's a big whoopsie for me. We drove
across the lower tip of Ontario last summer with the LP fridge on.

Not really trying to stir the LP on or off pot too much. It's been discussed
at length before.
But- we sometimes have long days on the road. 8 is normal. 11 is not
all that uncommon. My fridge will NOT say cold in summer nearly that
long. We drive with the LP fridge on.

Here is a poll from our FAQ area- http://www.forestriverforums.com/for...off-12674.html

My advice, do what works for you!
Happy Camping!

Never heard of that in Ontario. He is from Alberta, maybe the laws are different there ? Or maybe someone misinformed him ? Weird law if you ask me and with VERY steep fines as well.

Never heard of that in the US states I have traveled to. The only thing I been aware of is propane restrictions on certain bridges and tunnels. On my old bus, I Would run the furnace all the time as the dash heat just could not keep up. But had not considered it in the 5er this winter nor did I have any freeze up issues on the lines or tanks towing south when it was 9F.

We drive all over (Up Here) and never an issue.

Here is a link to the rules in Canada.

Only NFLD has a no propane policy in Canada according to the chart.

We solve that problem by waiting to de-winterize until we are in the warmer weather. And then we re-winterize when we come back!

Early January, last year, I left Ohio and headed to Florida, and planned to stop in North Carolina for the night. About an hour away from Statesville, I turned on the furnace, just to take the bone-chilling coldness out of the trailer. That worked great, cause it was still very cold that time of year.

Since it was just me, I put some food and drinks in ice chests, so I didn't even bother with the fridge until I made it to Florida.

My only concern with running the furnace while driving is that many of my registers are covered by slides. I'm not sure what negative effects that may have on the slide bottoms or furnace system.

None of my registers get covered by the slides. And I did not dewinterize until the first night in the camper in January. But due to a truck breakdown I had to stop further north then expected and was held up for two days. So when I hit the road that afternoon is was around 20F and stayed that way till GA. But when I got to my final location and hooked up water, everything flowed first time.

Heat on the road

Maybe I've been wrong all along, but my LP is never on while going down the road. For the fridge or the furnace.
Our Dometic fridge runs on the truck connection while the truck is running, so yes I have to restart the fridge if I shut the truck down, but my understanding that the fridge only needs to run on LP when TT is un-hooked.
Correct me if I'm wrong...

Most of us only have 2 way fridges (110 or LP) not 3 way (110, LP or 12v). I'd love a 3-way, but I just can't afford one. So I run with my LP on for the fridge.

You are so right. There are not very many units with 3 way fridges anymore.
