Hot water heater recovery time

So this might be a silly question. Does the hot water tank take longer to recover when using the electric element vs. propane? On my first trip the water would heat up on electric...but once it ran out it took forever to heat back up...I switched it to propane and didn't have the problem...when taking showers and 2 kids getting a bath I need the hot water.....is this normal?

You should be able to use both electric and gas at the same time depending on your hw heater make and model.
but gas is faster

I can use both...just seems like the water heats up faster and recovers faster when using the propane mode instead of electric mode..

I use both together. Like that it is very fast and we can take 2 showers in a row and not running of hot water. The only caution you have to remember with turning the electric switch for the electric mode is: make sure that there is water in the water heater otherwise the element will burn. On my side I always turn the breaker off at the converter at the end of each camping. The switch on the water heater itself is left on all the time and I control it by the breaker only.

"Unlimited" meaning I always have hot water after 4 adult showers. Guests first; then DW; then me. It is a 6 gallon Suburban. Using both the electric element and the gas seems to keep up with the demand for us.

Just messing with you. Ours seem to recover from one shower in about 5 -10 minutes but there are only 2 of us using it and we never run out either.

We have never run out of hot water so far using just the electric side of it. If I want a real long hot shower...I throw my towel over my shoulder and up to the bathhouse I go. Everytime I have used the TT shower..always had hot water, but I have never taken a shower after the DW has. It might be a different story then...

A lot of newbie's forget or don't realize they are not at home with a 40 gallon plus hw heater and believe they can take a 10 minute shower on 6/10 gallons times x amount of people !

Gas provides a lot more BTU's than the electric side can through the heating element.

I just looked at the specs for a Suburban 6 gallon water heater.
10.3 GPH on gas, 6.1 GPH on electric, 16.4 GPH with both. So, gas is about 1.5 times faster than gas. So, in theory, if you use less than 16 gallons of hot water per hour (about 0.25 GPM) using both gas and electric, you would never run out of hot water.

We used the electric side most of the time to conserve our propane and use both gas and electric when demand becomes higher. Also we turn both off at night, to save gas and element and turn back on in the moring, usually have hot or warm water left over.
