looking to go to larger wheels

I am looking to go from a 15 " wheel to a 16" wheel in order to put on better tires, especially with all of the controversy and problems on the Power King tires made in China that are called China Bombs. It seems that my existing 15" rims will only allow an ST tire to be mounted and most or all ST tires are made in China. Does anyone know if 16" rims would fit on a Crusader 290 RLT or should I even attempt to do this.
We are planning on retiring this summer and traveling and I want to make sure I have good quality tires. Any recommendations on what would be a good tire to purchase and what rating I should be getting to upgrade? I presently have Power King ST 225/75R 15 tires. Any help would be appreciated

If you could find a 225/70-16 tire that is almost the same size, diameter, as the tires you have.

My 2014 290rlt came with the touring package and has 16 inch tires so yes they can be used.

I don't know if you have to do anything special (I seem to recall someone saying something about a rubber spacer in the axle mount ) but I assure you a 290rlt can have 16 inch tires.

From my reading of tire threads, this is what I gather....

16" tires give you more tire options and you can purchase tires with a higher load/weight capability. However, it is common for the trailer manufactures to put on axles that don't have extra capacity -- frequently they are sized to the trailer weight with no extra wiggle room and the tires are sized to the trailer weight with no extra wiggle room.

Prime Time does sell the 16" upgrade on the Crusader trailers. I wish I would have done that to have more tire options.

Now, having said all of that.... I researched this to death because I'm concerned as well about the tires that PT used.

The most recommended tires on the forums in 15" are the Maxxis M8008. Down side, speed limited to 65 pmh.

The ones I will probably try when it comes time to change tires will be the Carlisle Radial Trail RH. They have a new design that addresses the problems they had a few years ago. Also, they have designed and tested this ST tire for a speed rating up to 87 mph (depending on the size you buy). It's the only ST tire I've come across that has a speed rating above 65. People are starting to make positive comments about the new design (about 3 years old now?).

If you want to go with larger rims and go to an LT tire, the ones that get the most recommendations are the Goodyear G614, the Michelin RIBS, and then to a lesser extent the Sailun S637 and Bridgestone Duravis R250. (I think those are all LT.) I've read that the G614 will provide some warranty coverage for RV repair if it fails and damages the RV (you must keep the tire and ship it to Goodyear).

I did that to a 1999 Sierra 15s to 16s rims just make sure you will have enough clearance between wheel well and top of the tire. Mine was was very close.

I have a 295RST with 245/70R16 Firestone TransForce HT's. They fit just fine with the lift from the Correct Trax I had installed.

Anyone have any thoughts on going from a 14 to 15 on my Rockwood 2608? When I look at the tires, I can't believe they put 14's on a 29 ft trailer. Want to go with Maxxis after this yrs trip.

That's no longer the case. The Carlisle radial trail rh are rated up to 87 mph.

You should really give the Maxxis 8008's a hard look. I am going on 3 years on mine. I moved up to a E from the factory D's. Just a bit more cushion for peace of mind. Good luck, John

I looked at the new Carlisle 16" F rated. They certainly look beefier and the largest 2 do indeed have ST in their model number. I see they have recommended PSI of 95 vs. my Maxxis' 80 psi. But I could not find anywhere that Carlisle supports 87mph. No matter, its only 75 mph on very smooth freeways that would come into play. Unless you travel the Austin Texas east side toll way where the limit is 85mph.

Exact same tire, same size and same rims I have.

OP-If you buy new rims they should be s "Zero Offset" That puts the load between the bearings. Trailertire and wheels have good pricing on rims and will sell you any brand. Good company to deal with and good prices.

Hankook RA08 in 195R14 is exact size as ST205. But it is load range D, 8 ply, 99 mph speed rated and carries 2100# @65psi. Great tires but I have only had them for 8 months and only a few thousand miles, but I have a lot more piece of mind now..

Make sure the new rims can take any higher tire pressure. Tires discussed are in 90/100 lbs range and check the number of lugs. If you go to 8 lugs to need to change the hubs.

My original tires had to be 65PSI if I change to Carlisle LRE They require 80 PSI will my wheel accept this new pressure?

Claude002: I am doing the exact same thing as you as I have a 290 RLT and am looking to upgrade. I have also been looking at the Maxxis tires, is there any particular reason you are going with the Carlisle tire? The Carlisle also look to be a very good tire. Keep me posted on your rim issue, I wiull be looking at my rims tomorrow.
