Yes. The little one you screw into your Coleman stove is a "tank"; ours are called cylinders.

A lot of good ideas here....I have to admit, I'll be trying the hot water on the side of the tank method. Wal-Mart has a magnetic gage for the side of the tank, but someone wrote a review that and only gage it two stars....Why waste the money, if hot water is more accurate....Thanks for the responses!

I ran out of time yesterday evening to conduct the little experiment. I brought a few tanks and the thermal gun to work with me today, and will try it when I get time.

When we had our "walk through" at the dealer with our 318BHS, the gentleman giving us the walk through was probably in his 70s or 80s. He's been around a while, and gave us a lot of little "insider tips".

He said he doesn't use the automatic "flip over" on the tanks. When the first one is empty, we manually flip over so we KNOW that the first tank is empty. That way we don't get lazy and say to ourselves "Self, we'll get around to checking the propane later" and later just never gets here. It helps us to be mindful of propane usage and where we stand.

The automatic flip over is nice, but it can lull us into a false sense of propane security.

that's what i do. it's no big deal when the tank empties to go out and switch it over.
i do it for the same reason, i like to know when one empties so that i can take it out and get it filled, while still having the full second tank.

I let the system work as designed.

I am usually in that compartment occasionally anyway (dog's stake out gear stored there) and checking for the red indicator is second nature.

The problem is you can't see the flipped over regulator with the crummy cylinder covers they give us.

So I put a window in mine.
