New baggage doors - Trim

I also posted this over at RV.NET and got a few ideas:

had the RV dealer add a couple of extra outside baggage doors to my new trailer. They give me access to under the dinette benches, from the outside. They look great and fit perfect. The issue is that the doors don't have wide flanges on the frame, so the freshly cut wall (inner panel and styrofoam insulation) are exposed all around the opening. I'm concerned about water and/or bugs getting in and also about the bottom edge of the opening getting beat up. The RV Service Manager says the door source does not have a trim kit for the door, so maybe they could put some undercoating or something similar on the exposed areas to protect them. That would help, but I don't love it.

OK - I have the doors 'trimmed'. it turned out very good. The basics are a nearly 2" waterproofing foil tape covering the 'raw' area, with some 'L' channel 1/8" aluminum bar covering the bottom and side flat areas. Pictures below:
Basic issue - good new door, not trimmed, delicate material left exposed:



Basic fix is to take some Waterproofing Foil tape, a little wider than area to cover (a little overlap) goes on with a very aggressive adhesive.



After putting down the foil, all the way around the hole, you bring out the big metal (1/8" L channel aluminum bar.

This shows the bottom and side aluminum bar epoxied in place. just the corners are exposed and they have the waterproofing foil. I'm pretty happy with the result.
