Noise from axles on Primetime LaCrosse
I have a squealing noise coming from my 2013 Lacrosse. Sounds like a wheel bearing. Check the temperature by hand and one is extremely hot. It's not locked up. Whether I am on my brakes or not the noise is the same.
Can I get away with greasing it? Or seek a professional?
Thanks in advance..

Jack it up and pop the wheel an see if it is loose. Maybe you can just tighten the hub, but I doubt it. if it heated up a lot, you'd be better off pulling the hub and inspecting the bearings and brakes to see whats wrong. OR let a professional do it. I would not go very far in that condition.

Thanks. I have called a mobile rv tech for tomorrow. We are at a campground without the correct tools to disassemble.
I am surprised that 2013 model having bearing issues. I doubt I have ever traveled more than 3000 miles total.
But I guess we will see.

I'm not surprised by anything with an RV any more. You might have gotten a drum with extremely little grease packed in it or a bad bearing\incorrectly seated right from assembly. It's smart to have it addressed right at the campground. I'm hoping for your sake the squealing wasn't a result of a seized bearing and a spun bearing race. That would gouge the axle surface, possibly requiring replacement.

It wasn't a constant noise or squealing . And I was only 3 miles from the campground when I heard it, so hopefully all is well.
Best have them all checked while the tech is looking.

Then maybe you have a pebble jammed up there between the brake linings and the drum. Inspection will reveal.

Well good news not a bearing. The spring adjuster broke then grenaded everything inside, adjuster and all.
So new brakes and repack fixed it.
Just a one in a million chance I guess.

No kidding it's clean. Not a dab of grease anywhere. When I do brakes\bearings I have grease, dust, rust everywhere.

Noise from axles on Primetime LaCrosse
We'll, I thought my issues were over. As I arrived home yesterday , I unhooked and noticed the same wheel was extremely hot. As if a brake is dragging. When my mobile tech was at the campground, he checked all the wheels with the brakes on and off and they seemed to work okay. The trailer braked fine on the way home (only 90 mile from CG to home) and no noises or anything. But I can tell something's not right.
Suggestions?

I would pull that wheel off and check the bearings , race and brakes. On my old wilderness I had a bearing race that was spinning and getting hot. Ping the race and used lock tight to hold it in place.

Very doubtful he can "ping" the race (cup) as they are hardened. He can "ping" (dimple) the surface the outside of the race (cup)sets in and then use bearing lock on the outside of the race (cup).

A hot bearing is usually the result of a castle nut being too tight.
A loose one will run "mostly" cold right up until it breaks and fails completely.

Thats what I did to my wilderness. Guess I didn't explain it right.
I had that wheel off 3 times before I figured out it was a spun bearing race making it hot.
Anyway it fixed my problem.

With all of the squealing and issues before the repair, it might have been a good idea to just replace the bearings and races from the start. After a problem with bearings on the road, I carry a couple sets of bearings and the necessary tools to change them out if a problem comes up.

I carry extra lug nuts & bolts but I never thought about extra bearings... I think I will add a couple sets to my TT tool kit since they are relatively small & inexpensive...

I have also added a brass drift punch 1/2 diameter and a good hammer to knock out the bearing race and a small tub of bearing grease. (Kendall Super Blu 427). I have a 1 ft square piece of plywood to work off of on the side of the road just for somewhat of a flat sturdy surface. Don't forget about the bearing seals if you are to add the wheel bearings to your toolbox.

So an interesting thing happened. I contacted Primetime to determine which axles my trailer was equipped with because I decided to be safe and just replace everything (brakes, bearings, hub and drum.) I went to a trailer parts dealer close to home and got a whole assembly complete. Got the new parts home and everything seemed to match until I tried installing it. The bolt circle was different. So the parts person locally asked if I had 3500lb axles or 4400. No clue. He states the most popular we're the 3500 in which he sold me originally. After showing him what I had, he states call Dexter or your trailer manufacture to be sure. Roger from Primetime emailed me back quite quickly and said call Dexter immediately about my issue. I did so and after email exchanges for a few days Dexter said they will pay for the repair bill of the mobile tech AND will send me a new assembly for free via Fedex.
As much appreciative as I am for Dexter helping out (which they helped way more than I thought), is there underlying problems Dexter is aware of?
