surge protection

Looking at the surge protectors at camping world. These are plugged into pedistal. My 5th wheel is 50 amp. Some parks only offer 30 amp connections. My question: Do I have to have a 30 and 50 amp surge protector or will just a 50 amp cover me in all cases? It seems it would take a 30 amp adapter plugged into the larger amp protector and then plugged into the pedistal. Also is the surge guard from camping world a good choice?
Thanks,
Dave

I would suggest you get one of these. Also you just need the 30 amp male to 50 amp female adapter.....

You don't need two. A 50 A protector with a 50A to 30 A adapter on house side will work fine. You will get lots of opinions of which one is best, so I won't comment, but anyone is better than none.

I had the built in Progressive Industries unit installed on my Crusader. I got the one with the internal display which is cool to see how much power is being used. I think the dealer charged me about 2.5 hrs in labor to install it.

Went to 'CampingWorld.com' and the surge guards were on sell (don't know if they still are) at a big discount than 'Camping World'. Called Camping World close to me and they said they would honor the DotCom price. Plus I am a Good Sams Member and Good Sam web site has a 20.00 off coupon that you can price. CampWorld box store also agreed to knock of 20.00 more because of the coupon. The Ticket/receipt said "price match" and + 20.00 coupon.

I may always be be cheaper to look at CampingWorld.com before going to the box store and get it at 'price match' prices.

I have a progressive industry 50amp hardwire surge protector with the remote display. I installed it myself, so if you possess the basic knowledge to safely and correctly install or replace a single pole wall switch in your stick & brick you will be fine installing the hardwired unit. The big advantage to the hardwired unit is that you will have the peace of mind that your investment won't walk off.

Got the 50 amp hardwired Surge Guard for our 2014 Silverback 33RL....went to Home Depot and got about 4 feet of 6 GA wire to get me where I wanted....we mounted it inside the kitchen cabinets just where the shore power cord comes inside the RV.....not bad at all to install.....added the remote display so I can watch volts and amps from my control panel.

Progressive industries hard wired with remote, you won't believe how much you will start to figure what draws how many amps and on what leg everything is on. Real eye opener. Installed myself, no problem.

Run mine on gennie several times a year.
It's possible tho that you'll have to make and use a neutral bonded plug to make it work.

It seems like that is only for motor homes that have onboard generators, am I correct? I have a Lacrosse 329bht, I am thinking of putting a 50amp surge guard or progressive hardware unit. I would just be running on generator occasionally and would get a generator that could carry the full load of 50 amps (my wife doesn't like to hot). Would I still need the plug or does it depend on the generator?

False.
Any portable gennie may need this plug.
A 50 amp capable generator will neither be light nor quiet.

On my PI with the internal display, there is a button on the display I have to push to let it work with the generators. I think it isn't seeing the ground and won't run in that mode without overriding it (which is normal for the generators). I use two honda 2000s.

You need to make a neutral bonded plug to stick in one of the 15 amp receptacles.
I also posted this in post 13

Then you can use your gennie with the PI unit

I do have question for those with the remote readout. Do you actually use/look at the readout or only when first connecting to power? I know when there is an elec problem, the unit shuts down power to the rig, monitors for when it comes back, checks for quality of power then allows power to flow. I guess my real question is: why have a remote readout? Unless you are watching it the moment power goes "wonkie" (an electrical technical term) you will not know why until the power comes back on and you can poll the remote to what the problem "was" - was...the problem is over, nothing you can do about it (if it was incoming power problem) and now the power is back on, your protector has done its job and all is "hunky dory" (the last technical term I'll use). I just can't see spending $100 or so for remote that essentially tells me nothing until after the event. Just sayin'.
