wiring in a power vent fan

I am installing Maxx air power vent fans in the kitchen area and the bedroom. I used the light power source (the one switched at steps by the entry door -- (personally hate this arrangement) The power comes from one of two wires that run together -- one is purple and the other white -- one feeds the two ceiling lights that are on the switch and the other goes to the third ceiling light which you have to reach up to turn on/off. I can't seem to locate a suitable ground wire . When I use the one on the switched lights ( wire appears to be a smaller gauge wire) I get a feedback when the fan is running (does operate okay, but the lights glow very dimly.
Thank you
