KC to Goshen

We are leaving for Goshen tomorrow morning (had to work today) and have been studying the route to get there. Google Maps says I-55 to I-64. I generally try to stay away from the mega cities but wonder if the south side of Chicago on a Sunday is the way to go or should I detour around it because of traffic? This route is calculated to quite a bit faster.

We are excited to go. Thanks.
John

I know it shows a bit longer, but I would go on to Indianapolis, and then north.

It is almost an hour further by Google estimate to go through Indy. I just don't know what the traffic through Gary on I-64 would be like. I guess that I could check the traffic enroute and make a decision before getting too far down the road but Indy sounds like a safer bet although that would take me through St. Louis as well and on I-70-neither are much fun.

Thanks for the help. If anyone is more familiar with the traffic south of Chicago, that would be helpful, as well.

I-94

I typed I-64 but meant I-94.

Right now the highways are all clear on Google Maps.....maybe there is a chance that it will be tomorrow, too.

Hopefully, we will be there before they stop registration.

I'd take Indy and an hour longer over Chicago any day.... and that's what I did coming back from a reunion in June - and we were traveling on Sunday in the motor home.
I've been around Chicago and through there enough that to me, there is NO good day or time. And those were in my car!

from Kansas City I would go East on I-70 to Indy then take the bypass north to Highway 31 to highway 20 the go East to Elkhart then south to Goshen, this is how we have always gone. good 4 lane divided highways once you leave Indy. Of course we go up I-55 and I-57 to I-70 from here in Ark. and forget what Google says

What W5CI said! He's an old, ugly truck driver and knows his interstates!! LOL

Take 70 to STL, then 64 to Indy, then US 31 up.

P.S.
FYI, the Archway RV park is a good one-night stopover in Mt. Vernon, IL. We are in N. Indiana and we stayed there on way up one night.

I avoid Chicago driving whenever possible and noway towing anything bigger than a small pup.! Would rather add an hour or 2 to my trip then drive through/around that mess near Chicago.

But that's just me..

Sounds like solid advice! Route is now changed. I appreciate the good advice.

See you there.

We NEVER take I-70 if we can avoid it. From KC we take I-35 North to Hwy 36 east through Hannibal. 36 turns into I-72 in Hannibal. Stay on 72 through Springfield, IL. Right before Champaign, take I-57 North to I-74 to Indianapolis. Go around Indianapolis on I-465 North to Hwy 31. Take 31 to 20, then 33 into Goshen. We've tried several routes and this works best in an RV.
