It depends on what you call a side trip. Kitty hawk is approximately 5 1/2 hrs from mt airy.

Yep, figured about 6 hours out to Kitty Hawk. A lot closer to Mt Ary than from Nashville. Thinking about running over the week before and coming back towards he Rally. Looking at places to stay there now, open to suggestions. Nothing like a 2-3 week road trip to get the camping bug quieted down a bit. Not sure what else there is to do on that side of the world. Getting caught up on the Andy Griffen reruns, had to get the over the air system up and running sat does not carry ME TV.

Two well liked campgrounds in rodanthe are camp hatteras (accepts coast to coast if you are a member) and the Rodsnthe KOA. Here is some I found on the outer banks. There are numerous state parks with little to no hook ups.

For those that don't know, we are making plans to have a Trailer Trash to Treasure yard sale at the campground during the rally. We are opening this yard sale up to the whole campground to sell and buy at. If you have camping stuff, arts/crafts etc to sell, feel free to setup a table to sell

They have WiFi. I stayed there during off season and close to the office so it worked. I will tell you there are hills with sites lower and higher than the office. I suspect it is going to be like most campgrounds... dependent on location and how many are trying to use it at the same time.
