Since you have steam in your veins, have you ever seen a UP Big Boy. I grew up in the 4th largest rail center (at that time) in the US, Council Bluffs, IA, the eastern terminus of the UP, Omaha was the 5th largest. At times the smoke from the locomotives covered the city. Women had to watch which direction the wind was blowing before the put the wash out to dry outside or it would be covered with soot. Not many clothes dryers then. Had a friend that was an engineer for the "Q" and eastbound coal trains coming from Omaha in Council Bluffs used to scare him since it was a pretty good downgrade. He said they stopped the train at the top of the grade and built up air pressure before starting down and applied full brakes and it still gained speed. Yes I have as when I was on vacation with my folks in 1956 and we stopped at Cheyenne WY at the UP yard and engine terminal. Took some pics of Big boys,Challengers and gas turbines. Watched them run Sherman hill. I also worked out of Omaha not far from UP shop there and they had big boy on display. For your info UP is currently restoring a big boy to put in service for steam excursions. Don't recall the number right off hand. Thanks for the link saw two locos from the two RRs I use to work for. When is registration scheduled to open. We will be in Alabama during this time frame returning from a 4 month trip. I did check the Frog website but it did not show any registration information. Not sure if we can attend but would like more information so that we can decide to extend our trip to include this event.
