Punkin Chunkin 2016 - Nov 4-6!

Greetings fellow FROG-ers!

We are planning on attending the 2016 Punkin Chunkin World Championship in Bridgeville, DE this November. Would like to possibly get some fellow FROG members together to meet up for a fun family weekend.

For those who might have not seen nor heard of Punkin Chunkin, it is a gathering of various machines (Trebuchets, Catapults, Torsions & Air Cannons ) that have been designed and built for the specific purpose of hurling pumpkins... FAR! The air cannons are closing in on the 5,000' mark!!

This event was canceled last year due to lack of insurance, but has returned for 2016. This event has been covered by the Discovery and Science Channel and has been featured on a bunch of other cable outlets. While there is boondock camping on site, we have decided to stay at Trap Pond State Park (about a 20min drive from the event). W/E - 50A sites are $20 and there are many available at this time. Event tickets will go on sale August 1st, 2016.

Event is about 3:30 hrs from NYC.... 2:00 hrs from Philly.... 1:45 from Baltimore...

Depending on interest, we can plan some potluck breakfast or dinner... or make arrangements to head out for a meal somewhere local.

I live less than 10 minutes from Bridgeville, and have never been to Punkin Chunkin. I do however go to Trap Pond at least a dozen times a year. Great place. Any questions about Trap Pond or the area that anyone might have, I'll be glad to help out.

Yeah, I sort of recall it was cancelled for two years. There should be a lot of tension waiting to be expended by the various mechanisms.

Not camping at the actual event... staying at Trap Pond and driving up.

Camping at the event is field style with no hookups, water or dump stations available. Its $230 for the weekend and you are required to stay until Sunday... I believe they park everyone hobo style...

that's a better option for sure. I live right between where the Chunkin is and Trap Pond. We do Trap Pond a few times a month since it's only 16 miles from home.

It's practically in my Mom's backyard. I used to go for the first 5 seasons. I have gotten bored with it. It's just not the same, then Dover Downs tried to take it over last year. So glad that failed, it might have been $450 for camping just over the weekend with no services. DD really socks it to you for the Firefly Festival. Waiting for DD to do the same for the races.

Only two FROG's attending so far... we are in B1 and B3...

There is some interest, but a lot of folks are winterizing already...

All are welcome to join in... we will plan a pot luck dinner or something as we get closer and get a handle on the weather for the weekend...

I might be camping there that weekend. That's my local go-to spot. Don't really have much interest in Punkin chunkin though.

Just got parked, unhooked and unloaded. We are all fine. We went to the event yesterday... from what I can gather the accident occurred today - seems that the breach door on one of the air cannons failed and was launched from the machine... caused one critical injury and another injured non-life threatening... not sure if they were both team members or if spectators.

I can comment that the safety team was extremely diligent in roping off areas and clearing spectators for the firing of each machine while we were there.

Thank you your concern - prayers to those who were injured.

On the bright side: We were thoroughly impressed with Trapp Pond State Park... Real nice and campers were very friendly.

Landed up being the only FROG there... there were a bunch of campers. park was probably at 70% capacity... quite a few Forest River units...

Had a great time at Punkin Chunkin... will post some pics and video tomorrow.
