Route from Memphis North to FROG Rally
Hi All
I will be driving to the FROG rally and coming in from the south.
What do you suggest the best route going north from Memphis TN would be?
I do not want to go north around Chicago.
So far I plan on driving north from Memphis on I-55 to I-57.
I noticed I can take the back roads at Champaign IN which is a shorter route. Speed I know will be a little slower than the interstate but that's OK.
Do you agree or disagree with my plan?
Have any ideas or route you'd like to share?

Personally, I would take I-57 to I-94 at the South end of Chicago and work my way east from there, but I am not driving your vehicle and understand that other people do not look at driving the way I do. Google Maps shows that route to be 613 Miles (9 hr).
If you leave I-57 at Champaign, They also look to be good roads. Google Maps shows that route to be 616 Miles (9 hr, 32 Min).
The other choice I see is to take I-70 from Effingham, IL to Indianapolis and take US-31 North from there to Peru, US-24 East to Wabash and State Highway 115/15 straight North to Goshen. Google Maps shows that route to be 608 Miles (9 hr, 25 Min).
Just my thoughts. But I drove a truck for many years and it is hard to leave that mentality.
None differ enough in miles or time to matter. Good luck on whichever route you choose.

Iggy,
What day will you be coming in? That might make a difference in your decision.
I-57 to I-94 misses the worst of the Chicago traffic, and depending on the time of day, isn't too bad, but try to hit it as early in the day as you can. Rush hour traffic leaving Chicago and heading east gets pretty dicey.
I've driven US 31 north from Indy. Not a bad drive...4 lane most, if not all, of the way, although there are quite a few stop lights.
I've done both routes. Either way is OK.
Travel safely!
Mike

They just completed the by-pass around Kokomo on 31 last year.
That by its self cut out several stop lights. So 31 north out of Indianapolis is a four lane really good road now.

Great thanks. It may look like that's the route we may have to take.

31 north to Hwy 6 to 15 north. Hwy 6 & 15 are good two lane roads that travel thru Amish country. Beautiful farms.

Google maps takes me up 31 and then crossing over to 15 via 24. Are we better off taking 31 all the way up to 6?
We'll be coming from Elizabethtown, KY thru Indianapolis on the Monday before the rally, if that makes a difference. A little concerned about Louisville traffic Monday morning.... I have spent so many hours routing this trip my head is spinning!
Thank you!

Head north and follow the signs... Last year the GPS routed us through back roads into Goshen! Just like home (we live in old order mennonite country) with horse briquets on the front of the trailer!

We will be following you up from memphis. I was planning 55 - 57 and cutting over at effingham, our hometown. Any updates on routing appreciated.

Iggy.....a couple years ago we came home from Goshen south to 30...then east to I 69 around Indy to I 70 to St. Louis. Not a bad route and a great campground at Effingham that makes an easy drive from there to Goshen. Looking forward to seeing you friend.

Thanks guys for the information.
I'm sure others will be able to use this thread.
Bobfidy we used that route around Indy a few years ago going up to the Ontario Canada FROG Rally.

Don't know if you have plans yet on where you'll be camping on the way, but there is a campground at the former Chanute AFB (used to be the trailer park). We're staying there and heading on up to Goshen via I-57 to Hwy 24 . . . It's called Prairie Pines Campground Rantoul, IL - Official Website - Campground.

Thanks for the information about the closed Chanute AFB.
This looks like one of the routes we have to consider.
It just may be the quickest and easiest for my caravan.
