Are they, generally speaking? I've got an Inverter-generator. I'm not talking about dropping it in the lake, just carrying it around (cable-locked) in the open bed of my truck. Will that cause problems with it running? Should I bungee a grill cover over it to protect it somewhat from the elements?

I have one as well and my owners manual specifically states not to wash the unit as getting water in the electronic controls will damage it and void the warranty.
Carrying it in the truck bed, water / snow or whatever could blow in. I'd cover it up with something while traveling.
I keep mine in my unit on the floor, under the dinette table.

I carry mine under a roll-up bed cover while traveling and cable lock it to the TT on the ground when in use.
A bed cover is a useful item for keeping so many things out of the elements.

Ah, I had forgotten about the electronic component. In my mind I was thinking gas engine in a plastic housing. I can see where this might be a bad idea now. Might have to go the dinette route.

I have often wanted a bed cover and almost bought one before. The only thing stopping me is i'd have to give up the rack I sometimes use for a kayak.

A run of the mill box store genny has no electronics to speak of, 3600 rpm and 2 poles give you 60hz but not sine wave power. An Inverter genny uses a multi-pole DC generator head (not AC) and the electronics convert the DC to 60hz AC and pure sine wave.. Thats what you pay for.
Cheapo genny's are not really impacted by moisture except maybe the brushes sticking in the brush holders (the brushes excite the armature). Your inverter is brushless. It uses residual magnetism to excite the armature.
Keeping those capacitors, resistors and diodes dry is a good idea besides, mine likes it under the dinette and while sometimes it's a PITA to get out, I know it won't get lifted from the bed of the truck and it's always protected. Mine has a double gas shutoff. One for the carb and one on the fuel tank fill cap.
