The AD applies to aircraft in use on the effective date of 06-01-1987.

The FAA also amended 14 CFR 25.733 (e) (Tires) which governs the certification of Large Transport Aircraft that all such aircraft be equipped with nitrogen filled tires on and after 02-1993.

There have some references to nitrogen use in aircraft tires ( some by me) that overlook the primary reason for the FAA issuing the AD.

One other thing - nitrogen is only required on Civil Large Catergory Aircraft. Those are defined by the FAA as those aircraft having a certificated takeoff weight of 75,000 lbs or more.
Retired now, wasn't going to look up references... That's why I have an RV now and try to stay away from anything aviation! Life is good

If you wish to laugh more, read 14 CFR 33.76. It's really funny.

Take it easy B47, the kids are just having a little fun with a topic that doesn't look like it will ever go away. Just relax & pull up a chair & enjoy all of the unique responses.
BTW gashog, that is a pretty interesting thought……..plus funny as all get out (it was meant to be funny, wan't it?).
I really am enjoying this thread & I have learned sooooo much!

Oh I enjoy the responses. I was just trying to cut down the number of responses involving aviation and nitrogen with the applicable facts.

Yep, I know this debate often becomes funny, but I also find funny the contributions made by people who forgot, or didn't take chemistry/physics in HS. As pointed out here by F and E Damp, there are few advantages to Nitrogen use in a street vehicle. (Few or none even mentioned here.)

Some things mentioned here in error:

1. An "air molecule" (there are many different sizes) but typically they are only about 2.5% larger than N. So nothing good or bad here.

2. N expands under temperature at the same rate and pressure as "air". (See Ideal Gas Law) So nothing good or bad here.

3. While the benefits of N are small it was only a "SCAM" by those that are skeptical in nature and refused to do the homework. I ran a race car prep shop. We used Nitrogen in the race car tires after purging the "air". (There are tools for this.) It guaranteed us a dry fill. In the off season we often did some street car work as time permitted. We did NOT fill with Nitrogen. However, due to customer demand, we ended up having to use Nitrogen at times. It was NOT a SCAM, it was a marketing advantage that we had to implement because everyone else was. I don't know who the first shop to start the N fad was, but they were the ONLY scammer. Everyone else ha to do it because the customer wanted it. With a set of tires, we did not charge for it if the customer wanted it.

There 3 biggest advantage that we could validate with Nitrogen.
1. Alloy rim bead seats did not corrode as bad.
2. Some TPMS banded the device to the rim with a riveted SS band. We saw many of the band rivets rust and the TPMS broke free.
3. Finally, nitrogen is dry.

Now, you can laugh all you want but if you got your N for free and top offs are free, USE IT. If there is a charge, it's tough to determine if it is worth it.

No Sir - I never did. I never really wanted to after seeing how the 4th man (which an observer is on the aircraft) was to bail out in an emergency. it involved jumping out the entrance door on the lower left side of the fuselage. No ejection seat for him.

I am more interested in the workings of an aircraft than the flying side.

Tirediscounter uses nitrogen to fill tires. They will check your pressure and add N if necessary. It doesn't hurt to use regular air in the tires. Just check air pressure on a regular basis. Low air = tire wrapped around axle.
