Cleaning squeeze out

Ok all I'm trying to figure out how to clean the black mess that has seemed to accumulate from the squeeze out of the butyl tape or whatever it is that they put on the backside of my slide trim, windows, awning arms, door, window etc.etc. do i cut the excess off?

Be careful cutting. See if a plastic putty knife works.

I also suggest some type plastic scraper or even a metal thin blade putty knife. Make sure it doesn't have any burrs on the edge. Held flat it shouldn't dig in or scratch the fiberglass. Try a small area and see. Also you might find that mineral spirits help lube the process and clean up the black residue.
