Sounds like a defective thermostat! You need to be able to shut off the furnace at the thermostat. My thermostat turns off by turning the temp all the way down until it clicks.

"PRIMATIVE Camping" Does anyone have the stats on how long a single propane tank will run the Dometic 2351, and if there is a 12v drain too? Anyone outfitted their 16FB or 17 Clipper for "off the grid" camping for 3-5 days??

Thanks

The only things I did to prepare for 10 days of boondocking was to add an extra battery and propane tank. I made it 6 days on propane before I had to switch tanks, I used my furnace every evening and morning and did some cooking too. Water heater for showers as well. I'd have to break out the generator every couple of days to charge the batteries, solar would be nice. The big water tanks on the Clippers are one of the reasons I bought one. I was able to make it the last 8 days with 30 gallons of fresh water, gray and black at 25 gallons each were fine. We stayed the first two nights of the trip in a campground so we were able to dump before heading out to the boonies for the last 8.

Went four days in my Clipper 17BH, gas was low but lasted.
Battery, not so much. Think it's the radio drain. Did turn on a light for a
few seconds a few times. That's it. No cooking or heating (was summer).

My battery without rv plugged in, was drained I think by the radio in about 5 days. It was down to 12.1.

Don't forget you also have your CO detector that is a constant drain too!

What kind of counter did you use for the replacement?

The counter was from Home Depot, laminated counter-top. I believe it was the Hampton Bay tempo Milano Brown. It was a perfect match for my pattern.

Glad I found this site, and this thread! I've added a second group 24 battery (had to relocate my gas regulator) and built a DIY solar set up. Getting some great ideas from this thread for my next mod's!

levic900rr,

Did you add a second battery box or find one that would hold both batteries? Pics are always appreciated.

I added a second box. Here is the only picture I have on my phone. I’ll try to grab another showing the new regulator location etc...

Looks good. We plan on doing the same thing as most of our camping is boondocking.

What year / model is your camper? You can add that info to your profile.

I'll check my profile, thought I had added it.

Thanks

I found that the earlier Clipper battery trays like mine were made too small for two Group 24 batteries to sit side-by-side. That leaves me with cutting and rewelding the end stops or filling the battery tray with pressure treated wood and mounting the battery boxes on top. Don't know what they were thinking at the factory!

The newer battery trays can now hold two group 27 batteries in separate plastic boxes. Glad the factory learned how.

Levic, I noticed some good sized cables between your new twin batteries. Good. My 17fq came with several feet of 12 gauge wire to the batteries. Should be heavier and shorter, so I am in the process of replacing it. See attached chart for sizing recommendations.

Thanks
I was off-grid for 3 weeks in Wyoming last Sep/Oct. I have 2 6V batteries and a suitcase solar panel. Biggest consumption of electricity was charging my laptop as I was working full-time (why not work from the mountains?) I would run the Jeep for about an hour each evening to top off the batteries. If I hadn't been charging a lot of electronics (laptop, tablet, phone, cameras, quadcopter, etc.), solar would have been sufficient.

It was cold so I didn't have water on-board. Used Jerry cans for water. Black and gray tanks lasted the entire time. Flushed with bottles of RV antifreeze.

Went through 20# of propane every 5-7 days as it was about 25 degrees at night. (I sleep at 55 degrees.)

Yes, the refrigerator has a small 12 v drain when on propane. Its control circuit is 12 v, but drain is small compared other things you use, like the furnace blower.

Did you have WiFi out there? What were you using for the connection? Great picture of the area, quadcopter?
