The inverter is only needed when you are not connected to shore power (50 or 30 amp). If you leave it on it is in standby mode and the shore power just passes thru the inverter to you fridge or wherever you inverter connects. When the ac power goes away either from disconnecting from the shore power or a power failure when connected to the shore, the inverter then switches to take control and supply ac power to your RV.
I don't leave mine on when connected to shore power. There could be exceptions if you in a campground that experiences a lot of power outages. Good insurance if leaving campground for an extended period and inverter feeds you fridge.
