I read the study and there is one thing that always stands out in a study like that. You find the words..."Could", "Maybe", "Possible" used all throughout the study. Not often do you find the word..."DOES CAUSE" in those studies. With a stomach illness, the possible causes are numerous and hard to determine.

Well, (I know, it's a deep subject for our shallow minds), this thread has gone full circle about 10 times.
Time to make coffee with my bottled water and jump in the shower with my unfiltered water. Wish me luck.
We are currently in Tombstone, so Boot Hill is just up the road from us in case I expire due to water related ailments. I wonder if Big Nose Kate's bar uses filtered water for their ice cubes. Maybe after five or nine drinks I'll figure it out....

I haven't had anyone give me a reason to believe that the drink water for a public source has a high risk of getting you sick. Members just state my wife and I and the dog drank the water and we got sick. We assume it was from the fountain but we never sent in a sample for testing, we just will assume. Then Flint gets brought up and in the grand scheme of thing that a very low percentage of people when compared to the United States. The irony is the Flint had lead poisoning and a filter wont prevent that.

I never said I was against using a filter and I have started pervoiusly that it can be useful in removing sediment and bad taste from thing like chlorine. Using a filter to keep you safe from the ever so extremely rare chance of getting sick from a publically water source is like wearing helmet because a meteor will hit you on the head. Yes the helmet would protect you.

Just to add my $.02 worth, we bring jugs from home to make coffee or fill out PTF free water bottles. However, ice maker in the rig uses the water from the rig, either the water tank or city connection if available. We have no fears using the ice. We also brush our teeth using the water out of the bathroom faucet. On the occasion, we have run out of the jug water and don't think twice about making coffee using water out of the kitchen faucet. The only time DW and I even think about the water is the few times we would use water that has been sitting in the water tank in the rig for a period of time especially in hot weather.

Water filters

I sanitized my tank with bleach. Then I use a Camco filter to put water in tank. Last we added a 0.5 micron filter for drinking water. I also did same on our sailboat we live on part time

Being that I work in the water treatment industry filtering is always a good thing. Like any private unless you have it tested who knows what you could be drinking. That being said as long as it tastes good I'll drink it. However I do filter my water for sediment and also filter it for iron. While I don't mind a little iron taste I don't like the metallic aftertaste in water that is too high in iron. Besides who wants orange stained sinks, toilets and tubs. My 2 cents.

Just returned from the Winnebago Grand National Rally. In 1 week my newly installed 1 micron spun wound polypropylene filter was dark rust red. Must be a lot of Iron in that water. After that filter it goes to a carbon black filter, then into the coach. Another filter under the sink and another in the fridge for water and ice.

Over kill ? Don’t know but I do drink the after it has been through all these filters. All water going into my water tank goes through the first two filters.

I hope none of you filter users eat in restaurants. Hard to filter the food!

True about the water law. But after years of being a R.O. tech. That law covers the water only. After it leaves the water treatment plant is a whole different story. The pipes that delivers the water is not covered in any law. Some pipe are from the turn of the century and they are falling apart all the time. The water company's only change them at that time of a break. It would cost way to must to go and replace them all before a break. I'm sure you have seen that on the news from time to time of the streets being closed and flooded out. I have seen on numerous occasions after a earthquake how much pipe debris falls in to the water system and that is also when any repair work is done any where in the water system. So, along how many miles of pipe work in any city or at any location debris will some how be in the water flow and end up at your point of use. Pri filter with Carbon filter are best and R.O. better. A filter alone is like a coffee filter. It is where the debris is capture in the filter and the water runs through the debris. Just like a coffee filter.

I'm actually done with this thread and wont respond any further. Its comments like this and personal attacks that can break a forum. I've already said I plan on using a filter in the circumstances I feel when its necessary.

I'm out of here!

How to kill the Pathogens

I just see the $20 a small expense............to each his own.
Read the fine print it says reduces. Worked in water and waste water R&D. Activated charcoal is not a filter per say but an absorbent. It will reduce color, odor, and absorb some molecules of heavy metals. If used to filter, I.e. reduce turbidity, it will clog, followed by a pressure break, and then do nothing to improve your water

To remove bacteria is problematic and we could talk for hours about the requirements and methods. What is done around the world is the addition of chlorine.

If you are worried about bacteria you need to use your on board water tank and add liquid chlorine bleach each time you fill it at a rate between 0.5ppm to 4ppm (never thought you would use your high school algebra, did you? Well now is your opportunity). The CDC says chlorine is the ONLY way to protect water from pathogens. If you have cryptosporidium it takes several days to kill it with chlorine or you use UV light.

BOTTOM LINE; The in-line filters we use are OK for color and taste and a bit of heavy metal reduction. They have absolutely nothing to do with pathogen removal! You have to kill pathogens with chlorine.

So get an eye dropper in ml and put in 1 ml of 1% chlorine bleach or 1/2 ml of 2% bleach for each 5 gal (20 l) of water. Double it if you are traveling for a day as chlorine will off gas.
