New APEX owner! Radio/Speaker Issue

Picked up a new APEX 279 RLSS last weekend, so happy to see the forum! We were Coachmen Owners about 25 years ago and glad to be back.

Radio is dead. Amp is burned up. Talked to Jensen, I was told that it is common for the outside speaker wires to be compromised with screws?? I OHMed the wires and no doubt the external speakers are showing about 5 Mega Ohm, should be about 4 Ohms. Question is, will the wires just pull through a chase, or somehow without have to really dig into the wall? I know the dealer can fix all this but really hate to in anyway tear things up worse. BTW Dealer is 150 miles away, so will fix this next late fall/winter.

If there is a short somewhere because of a screw hitting the wire, wouldn't it show closer to 0 ohms? Can you unplug the speaker wire harness in the back of the Jensen and probe test the wires out with your meter to see if anything shorted? If not, maybe just the head unit is bad? And if that's the case, maybe they can just ship you a new one? Might also want to check to see you have the right voltage going in while you're there.

OMG, I am such a looser! Yes, you are correct! After reading a bit more, it is common for external speakers to show a higher resistance due to moisture. Appears that I do just have a bad head unit.

Thank you so very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Got to love input from others!

Good luck and I hope it ends up being an easy fix!

Meg ohm reading indicates open circuit. Could be wire or speaker problem. Head may be ok.

Yes. You could also try to hook up a speaker to the back of the head unit and see if it works. Then you could eliminate right away if the head unit is a problem or not.

I have to give a "thumbs up" for Jensen. Called them, they answered, spoke English, told me to send the head unit in and they will send me a replacement. Pretty good customer service. Thanks!
