Plastic Skylight Insert

We have a skylight in our Viking 17BH, but it has a little flimsy piece of plastic between the interior and the actual skylight. It came lose and I used the opportunity to remove the saran wrap-like film that was on it. Is there any purpose of that little piece of plastic? I assume it was meant to be removed at some point before delivery. It certainly doesn't hold back rain or moisture. But, maybe it is somehow design to have that little piece of plastic there. I can certainly glue it back in place. But, I'd prefer to ask the community of experts what they think before I do anything - should I chuck it, or should I glue it back?

That film was to prevent scratches and should have been removed during initial installation. The inside plastic is to hide the roof framing of the skylight.

There is a lot of heat from the sun coming through the skylight, I put film on the inside plastic.
