Sanitizing the fresh water tank on a Chaparral Lite 269bh

Does anyone know how to sanitize the fresh water tank on the Chaparral Lite 269BH model. It does not have a waterpur filter that I am aware of.

Fill the tank with water with bleach (1/4 cup for 15 gal), turn on the water pump and allow some water at every faucet/outlet. Let it sit for a few hours or more (I usually leave it overnight) then drain the tank. Fill the tank with fresh water and flush the system...repeat again.

Dave, the water connection to fill the tank is at the top of the bay. I can't pour anything in it because it is vertical. Thanks for the advice on amounts though I probably would have put the whole gallon lol

Can't remember where I got this but has worked well for me. DW uses bottled water but I do drink from the faucet. I do use a water filter more to protect the system than water safety.

Eliminate this unpleasantness by sanitizing with a bleach water solution. Drain your tank, fill half way with fresh water, add ¼ cup of bleach for every 15 gallons your tank holds, fill tank, run “cold” water through your faucets, run the “hot” water to get the bleach water solution in your hot water tank. Let stand for four to six hours. Drain the tank (including hot water tank via faucets) completely. Mix a ½ cup of baking soda with a gallon of water, pour into tank and refill tank. Open all faucets to allow the fresh water to pump throughout the system – this step removes the bleach odor. Drain tank once again and refill – ready to use. Even sanitized, it is a good idea to use bottled water for drinking and cooking.

Dave, I think most of us have to use the hose, I know I do. My FW fill is screened and is filled with pressurized hose. I pour my 1/4 cup in the hose, hookup and fill. Once full, run the pump and open each valve until you smell the chlorine, including the shower and outside shower. Then let sit overnight. Next day, flush system until chlorine can no longer be smelled at any faucet or shower.

Thanks I never thought about just putting some in the hose before I connect it! That is an awesome idea. Going to try it as soon as the rain stops.

I would remove the filter first.

In my case, it happens automatically since I remove and discard the filter as part of the wintering process in the fall and replace it at the beginning of the season with a new one as part of the dewinterizing in the spring. I replace the filter as the last step in the process.

I think if you research bottled water, you'll find it no better than tap water or water from a campground. Don't know of any water system in cities or campgrounds that aren't tested by the states for purity.

never understood the reason why people don't use the water from their tank. Bottled water is expensive, comes in plastic bottles that clog our landfills, and is usually no better than what comes out of your faucet. We've used water from our tank for two years now; we haven'tbecome sick, etc. Eliminating every germ from your life isn't a great idea. Your bodyneeds some germs to build up antibodies. Anti-bacterial everything is what allows "super bugs" to flourish.
