So I might not be the best at describing what I was doing.

I was checking the play in the bearings by lifting the tire off the ground. One tire had play, so I needed to remove the lug nuts. Had the problem with clearance between the socket / rim here. Used a 22mm 12pt socket to get them off. The spindle nut used a socket around 1 3/4". I got a 1/4 turn out of it and fixed the original issue. All should be fine now.

Main point I wanted to get across is make sure your tire changing socket fits properly.
