Tropical Storm: Bug out or stick it out?

Camping on the SC coast currently in our Clipper 17FQ. Watching a tropical storm being forecast to bring 60mph winds with 70mph gusts to the area Friday.

Anyone got advice? Should we stick it out or bug out early? Never been in this situation, don't know what this trailer is capable of withstanding.

Personally, I'd head west.

My only word of caution would be "Exit". If at some point you decide to bug-out, what roads will still be passable for your escape.

Good luck with that blow over wind condition and what should for sure be a leak test.

Remember, it's not that the wind is blowing but what the wind is blowing...

Unless your Clipper came with the Bow and Stern anchor option I'd suggest a due west course at maximum warp.

I don't know. We have sat out tropical storms in Myrtle Beach before. One rough night with the trailer rocking and wind noise but great weather again by mid day.

If you're going to bug out, do it soon.
Don't want to be caught on the road in a traffic jam when the storm hits.

A trailer is probably the worst thing to be in during any storm.....ok I stand corrected...a tent would be worse! Have been through a couple storms that are nothing compared to a tropical storm, and it is a very uneasy feeling.

Pulled the awning in tonight. Going to make a decision tomorrow around 2. Hate to cut our vacation short, but we value our safety and our little camper too much if there's a chance.

The campground (Ocean Lakes in Myrtle Beach) is practically deserted... compared to its usual summer explosion of people. Folks haven't arrived for Labor Day weekend yet, so lots of empty space. If the campground was full, I'd feel better too (more windbreaks). They have started moving campers onto sites in preparation for people to arrive, but many of the campers that are on sites are empty.

Been talking to a meterologist friend of mine. We're in agreement: we'll watch and constantly re-evaluate. Probably going to head out early, but when is still up in the air.

They said it best years ago: "Blame it on the rain..."

It's not the winds from a tropical storm, it's the tornados that spawn and flooding causes the most damage.

Bug out early. They don't call it "The Low Country" for the fun of it!

Seriously? You have to ask this question? I would stay ONLY IF your life and your families lives mean NOTHING to you.

Otherwise.... I would run like HECK!! Far and fast.

Don't chance it. Head west and find a campground somewhere else out of harms way.

We went through Hurricane Charlie at our home in Port Charlotte, FL. Our neighbor had his fully load cargo trailer flipped over the top of his van. The van had only minor roof damage. Campers and mobile homes were flattened. Granted, the winds were stronger that 70 mph. But 60-70 mph straight line winds can cause damage from flying debris, downed trees, and damage campers-and those in them. That's bad enough, but often there are embedded twisters that can certainly ruin your day. Also consider potential flooding and washouts depending on the area and the grounds itself. Strong suggestion is to leave for a safer environment-while you have time. The closer and more ominous the storm gets, the more crowded the exit roads. Others may tell you to tough it out.

I have to agree with everyone else. Leave sooner rather than later.

2 years ago, we arrived at Assateague Island a day before Hurricane Arthur was offshore by well over 100 miles. That whole night, it rocked the motorhome like crazy and we had some water from the driving wind and rain which was leaking in the slideouts.

The roads out are liable to be packed and you do not want to be towing a trailer through intense traffic and/or rocking winds.

No offense, but the fact that you are even asking is concerning.
