On board generators

Curious on what people are using for fuel. Is it more common to tap off the fuel tank in the back of the RV or propane or is the fuel tank in closed with the Generator

Thank you in advance

My toy hauler has 2 gas tanks under the garage. One is connected to the generator.

The other has its own fuel pump.

How does the on board genny work? Will it kick on automatically or do you have to flick switches?

For now, flick switches.

When I add solar and/or an inverter/charger, itíll have automatic generator start capabilities.

there are several different ways to provide fuel to an on-board generator. if in a motor home the generator will normally be connected to the motor home fuel tank. it will be either a gas or diesel generator based upon whether the motor home is gas or diesel. for a toy hauler that has an internal fuel tank (for the toys) the generator will normally use the fuel from the toy hauler tank (gasoline) though it would be possible to install a lp fueled generator and use lp gas from the propane tanks. for a trailer that only has propane tanks the generator will be a lp fueled generator and use lp gas from the trailer tanks. many onboard generators are started / stopped by manually flipping a switch. it is possible to upgrade many onboard generators to use an auto-start system that will automatically start/stop the generator based upon battery condition (ie need to be recharged) or temperature (ie need to run an a/c). hope this helps

Most fifth wheels don't come with fuel tanks, the toy haulers are the exception. Usually all a generator prep package provides is a place to put the generator, some wiring, maybe a switch and possibly a removable panel in the cargo door for ventilation. Most fifth wheels use LP to run the generator to keep from having to haul or add tanks for gasoline. But there are always exceptions.

Thank you everyone for all your input. I have some things to look at

also check to see if you already have a transfer switch installed. if you have the generator prep you probably have it.
