12 volt water pump has me confused

I noticed that if I run my water pump with the city water disconnected, water gets pumped out of the city water hose connection?
If I hook the hose back up, but have the water valve at the spicket turned off, my pump will eventually build pressure and I will have water. (I'm guessing its filling the hose and finally building pressure) What could be the cause of this. ??
If I'm ever on the road traveling, and want a hot shower I have no water unless I cap off the city hose connection?
Does this sound right?
My old TT worked just fine without a hose connected, as I'm sure this is supposed to.
Is there a check valve somewhere that may be bad?

Thanks, Frank

I'm no expert on the plumbing, but yeah, it sounds like a check valve isn't working.

Check valve at the city water connection. Disconnect city water, take the hose off, turn on the pump, and go see if water is coming out of the city water connection. If it is, check valve needs repairing or replacing.

As a quick cheap fix you can either buy a plastic hose plug (maybe hard
to find) or a cheap plastic hose ball valve. Found in the garden dept of
Wallyworld or any hardware store or K-mart etc. shouldn't cost more
than a buck or 2.
Screw it in and shut it and you can use your water pump.

Thanks for the idea Dan. I just may do that.

A whole new city water connection with check valve is less than $20.00 here at my RV dealer.

Quick fix till you can repair it correctly is a visit to the home store and buy a hose backflow preventer. Screw it into your city water connection and it will allow you to build pressure with the pump.

My check valve broke, and I just used a garden hose end cap for a male connector until I could replace the fitting....about $1 from the local home improvement store.

The check valve assembly is not hard to replace, and may be done entirely from the outside of the camper if you have enough slack in the line to pull the assembly out to work on it. The hardest part is trying to get the new caulk around the assemble to look good.

To make something small, they also sell a brass male to male garden hose adapter. Price one of these along with the end cap and you won't need to use the entire hose.
