Anode query
Hi all
I have heard from many sources that the socket size needed to remove the Anode rod on a Suburban water heater is 1 1/16. I tried one in that size, but it doesn't seem to fit properly. (seems a little to small). Not sure what the problem is, could anyone offer any advice?

A one and 1/16th is what I've always used. I wonder what the problem could be, as if the socket could be sized/marked incorrect, or something else.
Now, the Suburban electric element is one and 1/2 (but it would be a big difference). Is there any chance you are confusing the two?

Nope...it's the big plug on the bottom. I've watched and read quite a few tutorials on the removal, and I'm quite sure. The last time I had my Wildwood at my father in-laws, I noticed that he had a 1 1/16 socket, so I tried to fit it. It just won't quite go over the anode fitting. I have the trailer at the dealership right now for some warranty work, I think I'll ask the guy at the service department when I pick it up.

Is the socket a 6 point or a 12 point?
A 6 may work better.

Mine is a 1 1/16, 12 point. Works on my currently installed rod and I just checked my spare. Works there as well.

I went to look at the socket I used and it happened to be metric. So it turns out I had used a 27MM 6 point which is approx 1 1/16". My trailer is out in storage and not at the house or I would go see if a 1 1/16 works or not.

The 27 mm is about 0.010" too small.

I think the socket I tried was a 6 point, if I recall. Definitely was marked 1 1/16 though.

Any chance the water was still hot in the heater, before you attempted this? I'm just spitballing here, and thinking maybe if the heater was hot, the anode rod head metal may be expanded a hair.......and if you put a cold Canadian socket on it, that was the minute difference.

I think he said he used a 27mm socket which is 0.010 too small and not a 1-1/16" socket.

That wasn't the OP who made that statement. The OP (thumperpaul) confirmed he tried a 1 and 1/16th a few posts up in post #12.
If I am understanding correct, the member (Canadiancrew) in post #9 who did use the 27 mm, was successful in it.

Just used a 27mm socket to remove mine with no problem whatsoever. The water in the tank was hot as well. Once drained wrapped the threads in PTFE tape and loosely fitted it back in, ready for next season.

I just checked mine and it's 1 1/16. Tried both six and twelve point sockets. As stated before maybe a burr or something.
