TeflonTape
The threads will cut through the tape to give good contact.

Suburban suggest using it. If you don't the threads may rust and you will have a heck of a time getting it loose.

The Teflon tape is designed to seal and lubricate the threads. By using it you should not have any leaks and it will be easy to remove the Anode Rod. Just wrap the threads three times and screw it in.

I have read all replies and now want to add my experience.
We winter in Az and have for 14 winters. I changed the anode rod and flush the Water tank. One time I did this and the rod was like brand new but a little rust showed in the water as it was draining. Later I read on an rv forum too many wraps of T tape doesn't ground and the tank will rust out. I remember doing more wraps on the earlier replacement of this rod. I replaced the WH at home just because and have changed to a wrap and maybe a half. Now a friend removed the anode rod because a neighbor decided he needed a drain cock install so that was not good. Nothing but rust came out of his tank when I removed the drain valve for him with a lot of effort.

I always use teflon tape. The pipe threads are tapered not straight and when using teflon tape always leave one thread at the end of the pipe/plug free of tape so you don't get pieces left in the tank. Again it is a lubricant as well as a sealant.
