Best way to really clean black tank

I am new to RVing and I have a 2010 Heritage Glen Wildwood. Which does not have a hose to backwash my black tank to make sure that is really clean. Is there another way to make sure you get all the waste out of the tank. I was thinking of sticking a hose in the toilet and letting it get 3/4 full and then opening up the gate. To make sure everything is out of the tank.

they sell some fancy gizmos that go down the toilet and spray water around but I've always felt like that is prob over kill. If you don't have a black tank flush fitting your idea is probably good enough.

When I bought mine, the dealer said to make sure I have plenty of water in to start. He recommended at least 10 gallons. Which would help in the emptying process.

Just don't use the white hose or the one you fill your fresh water tank with.

Yes, you can stick a hose down the toilet, let it fill up to 3/4 or so and then dump again. I've used this method, years ago, on our first TT. I would fill/dump 3 or 4 times this way and never had an issue with the black tank or with the tank gauges.

My new TT has a black tank flush, but I don't use it.

I use a Rhino Blaster. Much easier to back flush the black tank. I do the same procedure - dump, fill, dump, fill, dump. Works well and much easier than dragging a hose through the camper.

There are several different brands that work the same way.

Just grab your wife's toothbrush and stick your hand down and scrub. Use gloves and make sure to rinse her toothbrush really well before putting it back.

I can think of 2 simple and cost effective things you can do.
1) Get a clear sewer elbow (either 90 or 45 degree) put this on the end of the dump plumbing on the RV before the stinky slinky. 2) Get one of the Camco tank rinsing wands to stick through the toilet and into the black tank when you are dumping the black tank. (Do Not use your fresh water hose on this!)
You can purchase both at Walmart or Amazon, under $10.
Another thing you can do is use some water softener and liquid detergent down the toilet to keep your sensors working. (Google the GEO Method).

Unless the drain pipe from your black tank is a straight shot, those things will be useless. Even if it is a straight shot it won’t be very effective. Fit RV did a video on YouTube comparing gizmos for rinsing out the black tank.

You need 2 things - some type of spray nozzle inside the tank (either permanent or a wand) and some type of product to break down the solids in the tank.

To kick it off, put 10-15 gallons of water in it and drive for an hour. Dump. Repeat if you can.



And as stated, rely on copious amounts of water in daily use.

We always use a clear fitting so we can inspect the "leavings". After we drain in we fill a 6 gal water container and dump it down the toilet. We may have to repeat a couple of times. We believe the turbulence of the fast dump does better than the wands that we've used before
Also we don't do this every time, but definitely will do it at the end of the season

I use it to back fill the black tank quickly and easily so I can flush multiple times.

Works perfectly every time.

There is zero need to drag a hose and/or wand through the camper...

I always start out on a trip with about 5 gallons of water with the black tank treatment added. This sloshes around as we get to our first overnight. We use lots of extra water with a #2 flush. And we also have a Rhino back flush fitting, the clear section ensures the black tank is empty and running clear. One thing I learned early on, it takes more time than you might think to fully drain the tanks. Patience and common sense go a long way. God Bless

Some try to get every last solid bit out with every black tank flush. Not gonna happen. If fully hooked up, use plenty of water with each flush.
End of the season I do the fill and drain thing several times but I also use one of those cleaning wands to hit the sides of the tanks best I can before filling and draining. My DW gets the fun job of watching the clear extension to see most everything get gone I have a nice local inexpensive county park with full hookups to make my last camp for fall to do the final flush at during the school week. Very peaceful. Yes I do have to bring in a hose from outdoors but I have a bunk access storage door right by the BR, easier to communicate to the DW through, too.
There are various cleaning tab and liquids to assist in breaking down solids in the black tank. IMO those are best used with several gallons of water while traveling to get it sloshed around well prior to the final dump.

This what I do between campground to campground, I put a gallon of water in then a bag of ice. When I get to the campground all clean.

I agree with Itat... I watched the FIT RV videos and installed a "tornado" on my black tank, really quite easy. I agree with the clear elbow so you can see that you're not getting anymore "junk" out and only clear water. I know some say they use the hydro flush systems to "backfill" but really all you're doing is filling the tank, not scrubbing. If I didn't have a "tornado" installed I'd go with the wand down the toilet. Good luck

I used the wand when we had our Jayco. It didn't have a Tank flush as it was an 2007. Wand and a tank flush are the best ways to get a tank fairly clean.
