If the black tank were a "sealed system" when you flushed the toilet you would get a rush of tank air back up through toilet. Also you would not be able to drain it without opening the toilet flush valve.

Black tanks ARE vented. (Code) Grey tanks ARE vented. Galley tanks ARE vented.
Black tank flush systems DO NOT intermix with regular water systems.

Post #23 is also correct. The holding tanks are ALL vented. None of them are sealed.

If the black tank were vented to the outside you would smell the septic system all over the park. I was in a park once with a new camper, forgot to put water in the shower drain and you could smell it all park over the when I opened the drain valves.

Black tank is vented , period.

Go up on your roof and look about where your bathroom is, and there is where you'll find the vent.

Black tank flush ???

Post 20, 21, 22, 27, 30 I agree with the black tank is vented. No other way it can work. No way for black tank to get to the fresh water unless it runs on ground & into the well.

Really not sure why people think these are closed systems?

Only reason the "leave" open sticker is on there is so when flushing you don't walk away and forget flush is on and water and "other" comes spilling out over the roof.

The only way smell would exit from septic system is if you leave the black tank valve open, which you should not do.

The only sticker I have on my TT is black tank flush. I'm going to a full service site this weekend. I'll take your word for it that the valve has to be opened first. But doesn't the black tank vent through the stink pipe?

Well I guess this thing has sure been hashed about. I just could not see how anything bad could happen if my black tank drain was closed and I was running water into the black tank via the black tank clean hose connection. I mean I had the toilet open and I was watching the water rise into the black tank. It worked for me doing it this way and really got the black tank clean. I also used one of those hose connection wands that has the spinning head on it. That seemed to do a good job but some may not like doing that. I also see where someone said if you fill up the black tank with water maybe the jets are covered by water may not clean as well as if you left the drain open. That makes sense to me. Thanks everyone for all the input.

Is there some other step necessary to get the black tank flush to work?

I tried mine for the first time today.....and quickly found out that the quality control people at FR were sleeping on the job. I had water squirting all over the inside of my bathroom cabinet. The tank flush line comes through the wall from the outside inside the cabinet with a white flexible hose. The guys at the factory didn't tighten the fitting on what I'm assuming is the check valve, black plastic thing that the white hose goes in to and has a blue pex line coming out and running parallel to the white line before disappearing through the base of the cabinet to where the black tank is.

I tightened the connection on the incoming hose to what I'm assuming is the check valve, cleaned up all the spilled water and tried again.....nothing. No water went into the tank. I kept the toilet open so I could see - nothing. What else do I need to do?
