Black Tank Smell when Flushing
Hello All.
42' Forest River P-Dek, Fifth Wheel
I get back to my camper about 2 weeks later, and now I have a strong Black Tank smell when I flush the toilet.
This is new as it was not there when I left the camper previously...it happened in a 2 week span while I was away.
I've flushed the Black tank, which helped a little, but it is still there.
Also, when opening the toilet valve (foot pedal Dometic) it once spit up from the Black Tank.
I have not been on top to check the vent pipe. I'll have to do that the next time I'm out here.

If the black tank is pressurizing I would get up on the roof and see if the air vent is plugged.

When my toilet burps it's the signal to dump the tank.

So if the vent is clogged, as I recall, this vent pipe runs down inside the wall, and directly into the Black Tank.
If this is true, then I should simply be able to ram a hose down with the water on to unclog anything that may be in there.
Of course, I'll have the drain valve open so as not to overflow the toilet inside.
Thoughts?

it may be a nest that you can just take a coat hangar bent with a hook and pull out of the vent pipe I would rather pull something out they flush it into the tank, however that might be the only way to clear it if it is clogged. Like cave mentioned are you sure the tank drained?

we had the same issue with our black tank. make sure the bathroom fan is not on, it can draw some nasty smells out of the tank when you flush.
our smell was not caused by a clogged vent, but the vent cap is terrible. we replaced it with a 360 siphon vent and that has completely changed everything! you will also want to make sure your tank is being flushed each time you dump. if its not running clear, you are leaving something stinky in there.

My wife can tell you... Turn off any exhaust fans. The fans will pull the smell out by creating more negative pressure than the sewer vent pipe to the roof. If you only have toilet smell when you flush then some fan is pulling it back on you. Yep that bathroom vent fan needs to be turned off when you flush.

What additive are you using? For years I used ODERLESS, Switched to Bio-Active. Never had any odor from either one and the Bio-Active does an excellent job in breaking up solids and dissolving paper

We use TST treatment from Walmart in our houseboat. Works fine, once we got the vent cleaned. We use the Geo method in our ROO. No smell from either.

If you cannot locate a problem with the black tank it could be a bad AAV valve under the sink. The order can be just as bad.

We use Walex brand... Amazon, Camping World or other RV supplies places. The Bio-Pak are great. Different scents. Drop in tank.

Black tank odors
We use "Happy Campers" brand holding tank deodorant which isn't really a deodorant. Its all natural and works well. Better than those drop in blue bags..

Your toilet smells for one of the four reasond
1-your sewer tank is damaged
2-your toilet is leaking
3-it has not been cleaned thoroughly for some time
-you have created a clog

Problem Solved
So I just got back into town from where my camper is at, and I thought I'd report back the problem.
Got on top, and found that the vent cap had cracked / collapsed and was blocking the vent. Probably been partially messed up for a long time when I used to pull it around the country.
I took it off (if you can call it that, the plastic sort of crumbled apart) cleaned everything up, and I have no septic smell anymore. However, I only have a piece of scotchbrite duck taped on to cover the vent pipe...so it will have to wait a couple of weeks before I get out there again. The good news is the camper is under an RV Port, and the smell is gone!
Anyway, the problem is solved.
