Like Mr. Havercamp posted, you might investigate where the grey water dump goes to. You might be surprised....

Grey water really poses no enviromental hazards as the phosphates have been removed or reduced in just about all detergents today. Native grasses make a wonderful filter media as well.

Sewage (black water) on the other hand needs to be broken down through microbial action (in a septic tank) or commercial reduction facility in the case of pumping a holding tank.

Particularly to SidecarFlip for calling my attention to the SeaLevel monitoring system. I will definitely look into that. I love information and I hate dummy meters and lights. That will be a near term upgrade.
I have to ask. One responder said the installed meters are notoriously wrong and we will get used to our rig. How exactly would we learn how long we can go. Seems like courting disaster. If the tank is getting real full, will you see it rising in the soil pipe when flushing. Is that too late?

Bentspoon... Because an RV throne has no trap, you can open the gate valve (with the flush handle and physically look at your tank level if you want to. It's a 'straight shot from the bowl to the tank in most cases. I imagine some are different but I've not seen one.

On composting toilets, the one in our cabin is not without maintenance. Because the one we own has to separate urine from solid waste, the urine has to be emptied very regularly (which btw, winds up dumped on the grass in a meadow near the cabin, most of our land is heavily wooded with some open areas) that is a pita but has to be dealt with daily or it stinks...bad., and, the composted solid waste is buried in a shallow pit out back. It's rich soil but we don't have a garden there. The toilet we have is also vented and has a induced draft fan motor. It's 12 volt solar powered. Because we have very cold winters here, in the winter, when we are not at the cabin, and there is no heat, the microbial action stops in the toilet so in the fall we have to empty the chamber of compost and peat moss and start over in the spring. Another PITA but necessary in a seasonal dwelling. They do work well but certainly not flush and forget.

See:Level Systems are very accurate indicators of holding tank levels. They are basically a marine accessory but well suited for RV application as well.
