Constant humming sound from water pump

Currently out camping and the water pump is making a constant humming sound. Any ideas? This is on a 2017 Rockwood Minilite 2504s

Sounds like it might be trying to pump. Are you on city water or pumping from your tank?

If on city water, turn off the water pump.

If on your tank, look for an open spigot. You might be losing water somewhere. OR your pump is defective and is not shutting off when it gets your system up to pressure.

Now on city water. But DW was using the restroom before I got the city water hooked up. The pump pressured up from tank water and then began to constantly hum afterward. Nothing open and no leaks anywhere

You sure it's the pump? My water connection makes noise if pressure is too high. It stopped with my regulator. I still have issues when I blow it out.

Positive only makes noise when I turned the pump on and not on city water at the time. Only tank water

Are you carrying enough water in your tank for the pump to build up enough pressure to shut off?

If so, then the pressure cut off on the pump is likely not working or is set incorrectly, allowing the overpressure bypass to recirc water to the suction side.

Shut the pump off when not in use, you do not need to leave it on. Nor should you leave it on when not using water from the fresh water tank. The pump is wanting to 'pump' and so it is energized and humming.

And if you do this, AND you have the possibility of a small leak somewhere, SHUT OFF the water heater. So you don’t burn it up.

If you are certain that there is adequate water in the FW tank, and it is "humming" without a CW connection, there is a possibility the pump is in by-pass mode due to an air lock created by previous residual CW pressure. Try fully disconnecting the CW hose, remove the screen and stick your finger into the CW inlet and press the check valve button, stand off to the side though because if there is pressure there you can wind up getting a bath. If water under pressure shoots out, release all the pressure. Then try the pump again. Let us know how you make out.

Ok. I think I know what you are talking about and I believe D W is on to what needs to happen. I had a similar issue when winterizing today. The pump would build pressure in the lines but kept humming and would not shut off until I turned the switch off. Mine was because it was sucking air into it when I ran out of antifreeze and it stopped when I did the above steps.

I have also had the inverse problem where CW fills the fresh tank because the pump valve sticks open. To fix that you need to disconnect CW and then turn on pump to build pressure. Then when you reconnect CW no more problem.

Under what circumstance(s) could a 'small leak somewhere' cause the water heater to drain completely?

It wouldn’t. However, if there’s a leak in the water system, I’d rather not have the chance for it to cause the heater to fail. And how hard is it really to flip the switch(es) off?

I’ll try this when I get back to the trailer and let you know what happens

Ok so I did as you suggested and there was a lot of pressure. Water came squirting out like a fire hose. That did not solve the issue however. So I removed the water screen on the pump it self and found a bunch of whiteplastic shavings. I am guessing from lines that were cut during manufacturing After cleaning and putting on it works perfect now. Thank you all for the replies.

#1 cause of low water pressure, Especially in new RVs.
