That's like replacing your tires every year because it has a little tread wear. Waste of money

As mentioned, there is still a lot of life left in the anode.

Get a tube of plumbers liquid in a tube, works much better than the teflon tape (it contains teflon) and gives some lube for when you are tightening down you fitting. Its the only stuff I will use any more. Home Depot or Lowe's has it for a few few bucks, last near forever, use on metal or PVC fittings.

Tip from a newbie:
Make sure pressure is out of water tank before removing the drain / anode plug. Shot water across lawn and calcium chunks all over myself!...
I had just tried to blow out the city water connection prior to bypassing/ draining the tank!

This is similar to greasing wheel bearings every year. I've been servicing roller bearings in autos, trucks and trailers for 40 years. They get repacked when the brake job is done and I don't use the grease fitting in the axle or bearing buddies on "dry" trailers. I do on my boat trailer but it's going in and out of the water regularly. I can't imagine someone taking their car in to have the bearings packed annually. (Most of them are sealed these days but nonetheless, I would not pack bearings annually on any that are not sealed.

What is equally important to checking the anode rod is frequently draining and flushing the hot water tank. Both the corrosion from the anode rod and the hardness of the water you put in the fresh water tank, will eventually clog the outlet from the hot water tank and other connections and fixtures on your water lines. I drain and flush the tank at least twice a year. Doesn't take much time.

And don't panic if you can't find your anode rod, I have a Atwood water heater and it doesn't come with an anode rod.

Wow. I'm a bit shocked at the "I replace it every year" statements. That's like throwing away month old socks. What a waste of money and resources. If you are pulling it out every year and flushing the tank, why not replace it when it ACTUALLY needs replacing? You aren't "playing it safe" by replacing it when it's perfectly serviceable.

Just remember not to tighten it down more than necessary. The first time I took the plug out after purchase it took the neighbor and I on a breaker bar just to get it loose. Whoever tightened it during assembly went way overboard.

Back to the original topic. Most folks know to check and replace their anode rods. I think that is great but for some reason folks completely ignore their cathode rods. Why is that? Cathode rods are often forgotten and neglected and I check mine at least once a season.

I went to home depot website, and entered cathode rod as a search term. it comes back with anode rods results.

A Question
Something I have always wondered about ever fall as I winterize, is why we have an anode rod in our electric/gas hwh on our RVs but not on our electric/gas hwh in our homes? Seems to me that if it is a good idea for one, it would be a good idea for the other.
