I almost never drain ours. Always fill it or top it off after a trip using a water filter to get most of the bacteria and etc out, and add about 1/3 cup bleach when filling it if it's almost empty. We have a 100 gal fresh water tank. Our unit sits idle for sometimes 3 months and we keep it full at all times. Keep it ready to roll in case WW3 starts or a zombie apocalypse!
Anyway, been doing it like that for a decade. Only one time after sitting for 6 months did I completely drain it and clean it because there was a slight odor.

Chlorine Residual

The water from your tap is supposed to have about 2 ppm of what is called chlorine residual. That's the chlorine that is left over after the chlorine has killed all of the bugs in your water. That way, there is some chlorine left over to kill the bugs in your water tank.

The problem with chlorine, is that it dissipates over time. Your tank won't be completely empty and refilling with fresh chlorinated water kills any bugs that might grow during your home time.

It removes a small risk, and I find that in hot weather, the water starts to taste like plastic after a bit.

We get some very hot weather here in the Okanagan Valley and in view of that I have no issues with draining the fresh water tank. That way it does not take on a plastic odor over time.
Any way what ever works

I have worked in city's where you can smell the chlorine in the water !!!
Once a month or so I run a little bleach thru our Water Softener !!!
About 2 to 3 ozs mixed with 16 ozs of water,,, Much cheaper than Resin Cleaner !!!
