Electric/Propane water heating.

Newbie question:

How do I tell whether I'm heating my water with propane vs. electric?

Depends on which water heater you have exactly.

See if this helps.

Hello, first it would be helpful to know the year and model of your rig, you may want to add that info to your signature for future posts. Normally, on the front of the hot water heater, after you take the cover off, near the bottom you will see a rocker switch. It is the on/off switch for the electric heating. If it is on, you are heating with electric. Off and you are on propane. If you leave your rig plugged in while you are not using it, be sure and turn the switch to off, or you will be heating your water while you are not using it. Also, some models have a switch on the console that shows the water/propane/battery indicators.

Usually there is a panel with a switch to turn on the propane heating. Sometimes there is also an on off switch for the electric there as well although sometimes its outside on the exterior of the water heater.

Easiest way to know if your using propane is you'll hear it cutting in and out, espcially outside where the water heater access door is, electric operation is silent.

Also with most dual propane/electric water heaters you can run both at the same time to increase heating rate.

Thanks. all. I opened the front panel on my tank. It's electric only.

Confused.

While there are "Gas Only" RV water heaters; I am unaware of and "Electric Only" water heaters.

Pictures please...

FYI - Top one is gas and electric - note: black switch lower left corner for the electric on and off - my gas switch is inside and looks like the white switch with the "ON/RESET" light.

The middle photo is a Gas Only water heater - note no electric switch and no element; just gas tube.
